After reading numerous posts and threads regarding the best way to strip interior parts of the gooey coating, I tried using the recommended EZ-Off, brake fluid and other methods with overall success, but a lot of elbow grease and time. I then read the thread about using Greased Lightning degreaser (available at Lowe's) and decided to give it a try. I gotta tell you guys, there is absolutely no comparison between the two methods/products. To begin with, the GL has no fuming issues and comes in a pump-style bottle. No need to let parts soak, just spray on and use coarse steel wool, followed by another spray and some fine steel wool and rinse off. You might have to go back over some small portions of sticky finish you missed, but overall it takes this stuff off almost instantly. On the small crevices and nooks on the back of the ash tray door, I sprayed the part and let it soak for about 15 minutes. I then got what I could with the steel wool combination, but ultimately finished things off using my air compressor. Once the degreaser had a chance to sit on the sticky coating, a direct blast from the compressor took everything out of every nook and cranny. I want to thank the original poster who came up with this product idea and give him full credit for his discovery. Because this process has proven to be so easy now, I have decided to do the entire interior myself, a little at a time. The parts I have already re-finished with the plasti-coat look like they're brand new, as does the ash tray done in the Rustoleum fine textured finish (after using a zinc-based primer). Anyone contemplating re-doing their own interiors owes it to themself to try this stuff out. I have no affiliation with the product or Lowe's, just wanted to confirm how impressed I was with Greased Lightning. Henry

I wish I had known about this product last year when I redid my sticky parts. I researched EVERYWHERE online and on various Ferrari sites and tried ALL the different methods. The absolute best method was the oven cleaner/brake fluid but it was still a major major PITA (I spent insane amounts of time on the steering column...hours!!!)

Anyway, I'm glad a better solution has been found and can't wait to try it out next time I have to tackle this issue perhaps in my next Fcar!

    Thank you for the info...

I might give it a try this weekend. There are 3 remaining sticky pieces in my interior - no idea why the PO did all the rest and left those, maybe they hadn't gotten sticky yet? He did all of the hard stuff and left the easy stuff (gauge pods), so shouldn't take me long.

I too cleaned my major sticky parts (steering housing, ashtray etc...) with the easyoff method. I have to say the easyoff took me no time at all. But, my lungs suffered I am sure :>) I read somewhere about the GL also. So, thanks for the affirmation on the success of this method...

Just a brief post to clarify some things that I have been asked by others via PM. To re-finish the cleaned parts, I used Black Plasti-Dip (SKU#7581511203) on the switches, door parts and steering wheel encasement, then Zinc Primer followed by Black Rustoleum Fine Textured paint on the HVAC console and other metal parts. Everything is looking like it's brand new up to this point. Henry

I just tried GL and I agree that it is a simpler less stinky solution than Easy Off.
All I did after clean up was to apply two light coats of Rustoleum texture paint. It comes out really nice.

Which greased lightning are you guys using? Is it the yellow bottle, super strength?
Also many of you are making the ashtray part harder than you have to. Use paint stripper and it bubbles right off in less than 1 minute.

Don't think this product is available in Canada so I just bought a bottle while vacationing in Florida. Wife thinks I'm nuts....never bought a cleaning product before....

Not sure if it's the super strength one or not, but it is in a yellow pump bottle.

Yeah I double checked. Mine is the Super Strength as well. I am done with the driver's side door (including stripping and re-dying the black leather portions), steering wheel covers and center console. Couldn't be happier with the results. Working in my shop and watching football games on a Sunday afternoon really makes the cleaning/re-painting time go by pretty quickly.

Ok, let me add my thanks to this thread.

RSO1091 (aka Henry) pointed me not only to the Greased Lightning from Lowes, but to
Plasti-Dip, made by Performix. Black #7581511203. I bought the paint on-line.

A tooth brush, 5 minutes with GL, rinse (keep the water out of the switch). The passenger window switch was clean of sticky black mess.

I masked-off the white switch icon with painter blue tape as well as the non-exposed base, then a quick zap with Plasti-dip.

Amazing! It looks great! and Original!

Now I'm ready for the next sticky mess.

It's amazing how sometimes a better way is found purely by chance. I was literally looking for the easy off oven cleaner in the house and couldn't find it. There were a lot of cars in the driveway and I didn't feel like going through the trouble of going up to the store to get more. So, I figured that I would give greased lightning a try, and when I saw the sticky goo come off as I was spraying the stuff on, I knew that I had to pass on this discovery.

Unfortunatey we can't get our hands on this in the UK because one of the ingredients is banned!

"It is thought that 2-butoxyethanol contributed to the significantly shorter lifespan of Exxon Valdez clean-up workers, which is why Corexit 9527, which also contains the chemical was banned in the United Kingdom"

I bought and tried this Greased Lightning on a couple of sticky parts and it doesn't do anything. It seems like a cleaner more than anything.
I bought it a lowes and the bottle looks just like the one on this thread.
    What gives?

Sorry to hear that Erick, but it worked absolutely great for me. Did you let it soak for a while and use an abrasive cloth to take it off? Henry

I didn't, I'll go let it soak and see if that helps.
