The owner's manual tells me to grease the clutch release bearing (item 17) but not how. A search of the archives only reveals lightly greasing the shaft rather than the bearing itself. Is this what the handbook means?

Having successfully just adjusted the clutch linkage and rectified slight slippage, I'm keen to finish the job in that area.

Yes, that instruction is about greasing the mechanism that allows the throw out bearing assembly to slide in and out (not about relubricating the throw out bearing itself -- which is a sealed non-serviceable bearing), but virtually no one has followed that (very conservative) recommendation. Doesn't save any labor to do a preventative action there (i.e., just fix it if/when you have a problem). Maybe now that 308 are getting 3~4 decades old, it might be an area where more problems will crop up on low mileage 308 that haven't needed any clutch work yet, but I wouldn't take special action just for that -- JMO.
