So after an 18 month search I finally got my new 512TR today. Like many on this forum, this was a poster on my wall as a kid. Something I always looked up to. Along with the 959 and the Countach. Overall it's been an awesome experience. Looked and three or four Testarossa's and five or six 512TRs. After driving many from NY to CA and hours on this site, I decided that the 512TR was the car for me. There were a few that I walked away from, and one that I lost. In the end, I found a one owner 1993 with 8,870 miles in Chicago at Lake Forest. I saw the car online and put a deposit over the phone the day it was posted. Then, while sitting at my desk at work at 11:00AM in NY on a whim, I starting looking at flights to O'hare. I booked a 1:15 and told my office I "would be back later". Then I call my wife and said "Honey I'm flying to Chicago to look at a Ferrari and I won't be home for dinner, but I should be home in time to read the kids stories." Shockingly she told me I was crazy, but laughed, so I knew I was good to go.

So after negotiating a fair price, with a punch list of items and a full 30K service I flew back to NY. My flight was delayed 3 hours, but the earlier flight hadn't left so I walk on the plane and got home EARLY. All the stars were aligning.

During the negotiations the salesperson casually said they would be putting in about $10,000 into the service and punch list of items (sticky parts, hood struts and the like). So after talking with Jim at Pocono I thought "would the dealer really take $10,000 off the price to buy it as is?" Jim told me he could easily do the service for less than that, in addition to upgrading all the fuel and coolant hoses and do some extras like the clutch and shifter seals. So with that, I ask my salesperson how much he would take off if I purchase the car as is? I was a little shocked when he called me back and said $10,000. He even shipped the car right to Jim free of charge. So when Jim got the car I was a little nervous? It seemed like the dealer was being too nice. Was there going to be something that came up unexpected? Well I am thrilled to say that Jim just finished the service and he said it is one the cleanest 512TRs he has ever seen.

So I picked up the car today a drove about 90 miles home. Over some great backroads. Car drove awesome!

And as a little unexpected plus my wife said she loves it.

In the end I got the perfect car for me.

    I am so happy!

    Jeff

Congratulations on getting the BEST Ferrari regardless of price! It makes the ownership experience better when you can share it with your wife. My wife is excited about Ferraris now and she enjoys riding with me. She learned that they are works of art, not just cars.

Your cars feels very aggressive, even at low speeds, right?

Hey Jeff. I live in Pennsylvania not to car from where you got your car serviced, think I met a guy who wrenches there when I was judging at the reading concours... That's an awesome story... Best of luck with your car... It is nothing short of outstanding ...I was seriously thinking of a tr to add to my "stash" as I have a 550 maranello but instead of wanting the tr when I was a kid I lusted after the boxer... Was just about to give up and purchase a tr that I knew of when I was able to locate an ALL ORIGINAL high chassis number 1984 boxer with 8,000 miles on that was maintained with an open Checkbook... It is white with cream a d red interior... Only color of its kind a d come with full documentation ... Paid a little more than I wanted to but feel I have one of the best... The owner and I have become friends !!!... All this occurred o fchat!!!,I am in penn jersey region ferrari club. We should get together sometime, Stuart

Congratulations! Looks very clean. Looking forward to hearing your driving impressions. I'm looking to get a TR later this year. Should be driving a 512TR next week.

Congrats on your purchase! And thanks for sharing the detailed purchasing story.
First time I've ever seen some sort of black covering over the mufflers. I wonder why - since that area tends to be pretty hot.

I was wondering about that cover as well. I emailed the previous owner about it, and I'm waiting for a response.

So I spoke with the previous owner and he didn't know why the shield was put over the mufflers. Looking at all the service records the bodyshop that painted the rear deck was the one that installed it. So maybe they were afraid the heat would hurt the paint? Don't know.

RedFlyer512TR - Don't know if I would say aggressive per say. I think the more aggressive you are with it, the happier it behaves. Everything from the lack of power steering to shifting into reverse. So far only had one perfectly smooth 1-2 shift. When you get that right it is very rewarding.

Have a squealing coming from the clutch Jim says its the throwout bearing and should get better with some excersice. Said it happens from sitting too much. We shall see.
