Greetings, I am visiting Boston and I was wondering if some of you locals can point out any great traditional prime steak houses in the area. I want something local and not the national chains. How about Fcar/exotic/classic dealers were I might be able to check out some cars.....Thanks in advance guys.

IMO Grill 23 is the place to go - a bit "clubby" in atmosphere, but excellent steaks. Otherwise its the chains.

Capital Grill and Michael Jordan's are chains, albeit good ones. I have never been to A&L but not offering A1 sauce is a definite plus in my mind. Any steak worthy of the name does not need it.

There's also Flemings but it's a chain, although it's one of my favorites in town. If you wanted to venture out of the city Gavens in Middleton on rte 114 is fantastic.

If you plan on visiting Lambo of Boston (which is in Danvers) check out 'The Hardcover' (route 1); it is right up the street about 2 miles or so... The resturant is not on the same caliber as Capital Grille or Grille 23 (over-rated IMO) but it is still pretty nice... They have a great bar... Also Baystatemotorsports is near there (no affiliation but they are friendly and do have some high end vehicles). On a sidenote if you like italian food there is another place on route 1 called Donatellos; that is as fine a resturant as you will find anywhere...

Boston seems to really become a major player in the restaurant field.

Hill top is sadly going down the tubes. Braintree location is almost out of buisness.

When I were a bit younger it was "The" place to go I agree.

Hilltop was an icon now it is an eyesore... I went there a few weeks ago for lunch (used to work 5 minutes from there) and it was average food; not worth coming up from Miami to go to...

If you're out LofB's way then Gaven's on 114 is also good. But based on the original non-chain request, G23 all the way.

Italian Food - well, we have close to 100 italian restuarants here in the North End!! Depends on the type of Italian food you are looking for - I know sounds crazy but there is the trendy, or the classic and then the region. Parking is tough - several do have valet - but I would love to help you there.

One great restuarant is located on the water in Dorchester on the Quincy line - call Venezia - with a great water view of Boston! And plenty of Free parking - this restuarant is a hidden gem! you can check out their website at www.venezia-onthewater.com

    Ciao, Therese

I agree, in town the North End has a fantastic selection. North of town is Ristorante Ponte Vecchio in Danvers. Highly rated, vast wine selection.

You can't go wrong with almost anyplace in the North End but Ponte Vecchio is great (as is Gavens for steak) when you don't want to go into the city!

You made the best choice with your steak choice. Check in downstairs and if the bar is too full – usually is, head up stairs to the 2nd bar, not as classic however you can get a drink and enjoy some excellent complimentary aged cheddar and crackers. Also be sure to request downstairs seating for dinner, it is classic old school steak house – upstairs not as good. As far as Italian go to Hanover Street in the North End and look around and look at menus, as everyone mentioned it is the only choice for Italian food in Boston, yes Davios and Via Matta both down town are excellent with exceptional cuisine they are both trendy Celebrity Chef owned joints, which is fine, however old school Magnificent Italian food is in about 50 restaurants in the North End with over 100 to choose from. Plus you get to go to a nice bakery after dinner get a cannoli, espresso, and relax and dream of the red mist ..... oh .....the RED MIST.

    Best,

    Andrew

I have enjoyed eating at Davide (I think it's on Atlantic Ave, on the fringes of the North End) a few times. Many of the North End restaurants have the same menu rehashed different ways and are also very difficult to get into during the summer.

For takeout, you can't beat the subs at Emedio's in the North End, though. My sister has a condo there, just off Hanover, and she pays me in subs whenever I go over there to work on her "fixer upper"!

If you venture out of town, Trattoria Tomasso in Southborough (Mass Pike west to exit 12, then route 9 west for a couple of miles) has outstanding food too.

i wouldn't rush to Tomasso's. i've been twice now. the first time the food was excellent, but ridiculously over-salted (as was my wife's; and i got the same report from a friend who'd been there a few weeks earlier). we went back back again and the food was merely adequate, and the wine was served downright warm.

i don't plan to head back there. i WANT them to be great, but alas. for that kind of money there's much better, consistent places to eat at (eg: Lumiere's in West Newton - the same distance for me in the other direction - though it's not Italian).

    doody.
