So he butchered a LaFerrari to put the engine in a 458?

    Does not compute...

Could be a multitude of reasons he seems to have a good connection with Ferrari, he could have got an engine out of one of the LaFerrari test mules and shoehorned it into a 458 who knows maybe Greg himself will see this and possibly shed some light on how this thing came about.

I always assumed it was a test bed mule for the drivetrain?

AFAIK yes, exactly this. Actually Ferrari 'butchered' a 458 to put LaF's V12 in it and test it as a mule for the then upcoming supercar. Almost the same thing as they did with the 348 and Enzo's V12 too. In case of Greg's car, i assume that Greg wanted the car to look like new so Ferrari did that job by 'restoring' it.

    :)

that engine looks like a beauty tucked in the back of the 458... i love the fact the v12 fits in there.. time for an upgrade
