I borrowed this pic from Mguthrie which I saw in another thread. I have a series 1 81 400i and its lacking the bright trim that runs along the bottom and up both sides of the grill opening. What is this made of and how is it fastened? There's no indication mine had one but it must've.

I also have a 1981 series 1. From memory it’s very similar to the trim on the bottom on the front bumper which is stainless steel and counter sunk screws. Kind of a “L” with a radius on the edge. If you want a detailed video I can take a video next time I have the car out.

    Hello Newman, hello au400i,

thank you for pointing this out.

I may add that the trim is not more than 1 mm in gage (stainless steel), with approx. 8 mm of the front edge slightly curved downwards. This bend runs along the whole part and adds to keeping the trim in its overall shape, e. g. when removed.
The mounting wholes have a raised edge (approx 1 mm above overall level).
Mounting screws are stainless as well, and the retainer plate at the rear side is mild steel (in the photo, it is covered slightly with cavity grease).

As mine was missing as well I purchased a used one for spare and noted with some surprise that the pattern of mounting wholes of the trim doesn´t match that of the front covering, at least not in every position. Though, either part seems original and not re-worked.

It seem this is the piece and the 412 also has it. Confirm, I can see if the shop can replicate one.

I remember looking for this briefly a few years ago and now looking again I see what the problem was, the parts book doesn't show it.

The trim I need isn't in that parts illustration and the pic you posted earlier in the thread is for the bumper not the lower valance.

The parts diagram of the 400/400i PF body parts catalogue, with badges and window trim, possibly also shows the trim of the front covering discussed here (position 8).
Actually in the exploded view drawing, most of it hides behind the main body structure.
