A new issue developed the other day on my 328. When turning the steering wheel, there was a grinding very high in the steering column and it felt like there was sand or very small rocks just passed the wheel. Fearing a bearing issue and that the column may seize up on me while driving, I immediately took the car to my mechanic. He says the coating around the horn contacts has worn off. The only solution he knows is to send the column to someone who rebuilds them and this will be several thousand dollars. Alternatively he says he could depress the horn sensors so they do not rub together, but then I will not have a horn.

Anyone ever experience this? Suggestions? Thanks,

    Trey

    1.) change your mechanic ;)

2.) use the search function ...there are a couple of threads dealing with horn problems

    for ex.

Listen to the grinding sound when I turn a corner in this video. Is that the sound your steering column is making?

With my car, '85 308, that sound came and went on its own within a few days. I was in the middle of doing some other work on the car at the time and didn't have a chance to dig into it before it went away. Everything on the column works, that sound just came and went.

My car had also been sitting for quite some time, so my thought was that some blob of grease in there made it's way around with the workout I gave it. At least that was my wish.

There are a lot of good steering column threads here, just be creative with your search.

    Good luck!

I had this exact problem with my 328 last year. I took it to the mechanic I used and he found it was something having to do with the turn signal mechanism but I don't remember exactly. He did something to fix it and and it has worked perfectly since.

Grinding or squeaking like leather binding? There's also a few threads on the grating sound being attributed to a flex joint. I don't have a link at the moment, but mine's started to do it too.

My mechanic told me it was a horn contact issue as well. I put some high end bicycle grease on some card stock and wiped it in behind the wheel. About a week later it was gone and never came back.
