You'd better limit your shopping list to canned foods Todd ! :) It's getting rather warm in there, and the taste/smell of fresh stuff won't improve either..

I always have put (any) luggage/cargo in the front/spare wheel well as much as possible. Anything put in the back got that "tasty" fuel odeur/smell (clothes !!), that appeared to be unavoidable in my fanatically maintained, 100% technically sound carbed car. Maybe this doesn't appear with injected cars ?!

And better check-up regularly that your emergency opening cable for the trunk latches is operative, because please do keep in mind that the standard latch housing breaks...
and the probability will be greater if you use it often.
With something that could be perissable in the trunk, you will not be able to wait very long before opening it.

Good points. The drive home will be short and I imagine an FI car would not have fumes to deal with, and where is the emergency opening cable?

The emergency opening cable is a "T" handle, situated on the cockpit/engine compartment firewall, behind the driver's seat belt, just beneath your left shoulder: when the seat belt is retracted and lying (= vertically) against the firewall, you have to displace it slightly to see the "T" handle.
Please keep in mind that the plastic "cup" around the standard latch in the door jamb usually breaks (the cable restrainer goes through the plastic bottom of the "cup" or "tub"; the cable having no restrainer, it is then impossible to open the trunk).
This is a very common problem on 3x8, and a new opening latch mechanism could be quite pricey: about 450 U$ for an OEM one...but there are replacements; it is a nice part to stock when you see an affordable one for sale.
Injected cars usually have no gasoline fumes towards the trunk (especially the late production 328s, which have a supplementary carpeting beneath the engine hood, lying on the trunk when closed)

Is this plastic cup an inspectable item?

You can inspect it but the impending failure is difficult to detect: usually it is the small "round tower" onto which the release cable is seated, at the back of the housing, which goes through it, this when you are trying to release your hood.
"Our" own man Verell manufactures replacement parts; there are also copies in aluminium.

This is why it is useful to check from time to time the emergency release handles; the front one is a "loop" that you should find beneath/behind the dashboard at the left of the steering column, towards the door.

I'm confused. The link is to the handle not the latch.

Why not just carry several cloth grocery bags, so you can put heavy stuff (cans, bottles) likely to shift around in the bottom of the bag or bags, with lighter stuff on top (lettuce or ?)?

Or possibly get a wicker or semi-stiff carrying basket that would fit easily in the trunk area that would keep stuff from tipping over or spilling out... you don't plan in competitive driving while grocery shopping, I assume...?

Maybe also a small pillow that can brace stuff, or thrown on the passenger seat when there's not enough room for it.

Looking at the stuff on Amazon seems to me there's a good chance of ruining the trunk enclosure if you try to anchor the fittings to the cloth, or even thru the cloth to the body panels. That's what happens when one gets a car meant only to hold a set of golf clubs (or a pair of shotguns!) in the boot and that's about it.

Sounds like a good example of K.I.S.S., here.

    Cheers,
    Rich

Europe uses cloth bags, but the basket is a good idea. I think a simple metal upside down T with anti-slip stuff on the bottom would work too.

baskets or boxes with Velcro stuck to the bottom will stop the shift...except when you drift the corners at 80mph.

as to the plastic trunk latch - replace it with a metal one from SuperFormance UK. Way nicer parts.

    Just an FYI.

On my '81, the trunk gets toasty. I never put anything in there that needed a cool area for very temp storage. After an hour or less, anything that could melt, did.

There was a guy awhile back making covered, sealed, soft and insulated liners for the spare tire area, that would keep stuff from getting hot while in transit.

I bet a 3x8 trunk version could also be aquired.
