I have a New Zealand pilots license, and I intend to get my US license based on that (it's just paperwork and a medical), however I have not flown for 15 years so would not feel comfortable flying.

Not only do I feel out of touch, there are some differences in the aviation laws too (our VFR levels are north-south, whereas here they're east-west for example). And I've not calculated a route or read a metar or notam for a long time. Really need to bring my skills back up to speed before I apply for my US license.
Any recommendations on self-study courses (VFR)? Kings? Jeppesen? Or are there recommended books to read? Something to get back up to speed with metrology, navigation, airspace etc. before I look to take some refresher lessons.

Sporty’s has a great app based VFR program. They also have courses for just about every other rating. Highly recommended.

Thanks - Sporty's was another I looked at, but my only app capable device is my phone, and I really can't imagine studying on that. Could be a good excuse to buy an Apple TV if it runs on that, or an iPad. The iPad could be useful as there's several navigation and flight planning apps available for it.

I would recommend getting an iPad and a GPS/ADS-B receiver (such as the Stratus or Garmin). What they can do in the cockpit is incredible.

Thanks - I'll definitely look at that. Any recommendations on apps to pair them to?

I liked “sleeping” with Martha King 12 years ago, really good DVD computer based ground for Cessna program. However, I’m not sure how things have changed in 12 years. I would assume King’s aren’t necessarily “best in class” anymore.

Thanks Rob. I've heard good things about the King's course. Some have said it's sometimes cheesy or funny to watch, but they still rated it highly regarding what you're getting. And I see their site has reviews that are pretty current, so I'm guessing the material is accurate, although it might not cover the latest avionics. I'm less worried about that, as it's really the regulations and technicalities I need to refresh my memory on - glass cockpits will be something wholly new for me to learn if I encounter them.

Thanks - ForeFlight seems to be very popular - and thanks for the tip on the GPS/ADS-B.

I don't use ForeFlight, but I do use Fltplan Go. Although, honestly, I use JeppFD and Garmin Pilot more, but those probably don't make as much sense in your situation. I have encouraged my kids to use Fltplan Go.

Thanks Don - I'll check that out too. I've never used software to do any flight planning - "in my day" we did it all by hand. We even used a fax to submit the flight plan to the CAA! And because we had analogue mobile phones which worked well above ground level, we used to provide our mobile numbers and then if all other communication failed they could ring us.

I remember calling in and leaving my flight plan on an answering machine. :)

I just recently got back into civilian flying after a hiatus from my military flying and chose Pilot Training Solutions. Their commercial pilot review course will work for private or commercial, it's inexpensive and as good as anything else I've seen. No affil. Web site is www.passfaaexams.com

I used King’s. But that’s been 45 years ago. There’s probably not any bad ones.

Sheppard is currently very well though of.

ForeFlight with Stratus is absolutely amazing. They just released Synthetic Vision for it.
