As much as it makes no sense to many, I am interested in optimizing performance with this car. That being said, in my opinion, the original induction is better than the gruppe-m, especially at speed.
What’s the difference between spending $3k on an intake and $3k on a muffler? People expect hp gains (and sound improvement) as they are “advertised” to increase hp. Whether they do as advertised is another matter. If GruppeM sold their intakes and advertised “no power gains, just for show” … I’d say no one would buy them and even less likely for $3k.
There is dyno documentation there were gains in the low to mid-range on a 2.7, which most people felt and reported without dyno testing over the years. However it actually lost 10-15 hp on the top end. Someone put a trumpet directly behind the filter to increase velocity and he gained it all back and then some.
Actually, I’ve known about these shields as they are painted silver and stand out quite a bit on a challenge car. If they were black, I probably would have never noticed them . I just didn’t understand how they were attached. Didn’t know if they were bolted or taped/glued on or what? I see the strap in the diagram, but I’m not seeing how the strap is deployed to secure it. You see the two straps in the pictures of the parts on the right. Another way of securing the shields was implemented on the blue car seen on the left. I see a slot on the strap. Perhaps that engages a fitting on the clamp in the front. My next track event is in a month. I'll check to see how the shields are secured then. Again, these shields did very little to cool the airflow through the induction path. I've only seen two Challenge cars with them.
Ferrparts will get you halfway there with a LH shield. https://www.ebay.com/itm/121852514756?epid=1553348696&hash=item1c5ef9d1c4:g:IqIAAOSwhkRWhBdS Any chance you know of a picture? Would like to know more about size, shape, and length.
I can picture these in my car in carbon fiber . For $1200, they better work. Not sure which is worse. Buying these for $1200 or buying a GruppeM Intake for $3k . Already linked you to a few pictures of trumpets. If I had the exact size, length, shape, the intake would already be on my car . Only reason I haven’t installed it is because I’m still iffy on the looks and didn’t feel like losing 10-15 rwhp on the top end. Once I figure out a trumpet solution, I’ll be testing the intake on the car. Until then, I’m actually more excited about my $200 ITG air filters .
