    Reported in today's ledger,
A study reported a high rate of serious accidents along this stretch of the GSP usually during the weekday & weekend shore traffic. The study looked at 5 years of accidents along the whole 172 miles & found almost 1/2 of the most crash prone areas were in this stretch (Monmouth & Ocean counties). The Transportation Authority has decided to act by dropping the speed limit. It goes on to say stepped-up patrols & helicopter monitoring have already begun.

I have driven the GSP for many, many years. I am rather happy getting below exit 120 where I find the traffic to move better and be more civil than the northern parts. My experience is in direct contrast to the study. This study has me going "Hmmmmmm, is there an alterior motive here?"

Oh, and also saw a short article saying those portable speed radar units that are secured to speed limit signs cost about $10,000 and are made by 3M called a Driver Feedback Sign. Hmmmm, blue tooth capability, huh? :)

They need to worry about the northern part of the GSP where the lanes are claustrophobic, extremely crowded, and always clearing away an accident.

I've been driving on the GSP for years and haven't noticed a difference in traffic between the speed limit at 65 or 55mph. The cops are always in the same places and for the most part are looking for those really on it. I think most people travel between 75 and 80mph and with the limit at 65 its more difficult to write tickets. When they lower to 55 it will make giving out tickets easier, most people aren't going to suddenly change there pace when they see or don't see the 55 signs. Once again this is about making more money.
