In anticipation of the season (yeah we do things different down here ) I'm looking to fix a couple of minor details and need advice. First, the headlining has a slight sag under the sunroof. The locals shops I took it to aren't sure how it's supposed to be affixed. Best guess is that it's not attached on the sides but only front and rear. They suggest removing the trim at the back of the sunroof and stretching it taut. Opinions? Second, the interior door lights are loose. They seem to be a press fit with no support bracket. Is that so and if so is there a way to snug them? Thanks.
Can't help you with the headliner as the sunroof cars are different. The interior lights are a pain. Mine will come loose if you close the door too hard. Just two spring loaded pins that can't seem to get positioned behind the leather trim. Same with the one over the rear window, seems to viabrate loose occaisionally. With the sunroof/headliner, do you have the lamp over the rear window?
My GT/4 has the same problem with the sunroof upholstery. Was going to address it this winter. I am thinking that I will have to pull the whole thing off just to figure it out. But hope not. Anyone with ideas out there?
Quote: "The locals shops I took it to aren't sure how it's supposed to be affixed. " Assuming you weren't just looking for free advice, if it were mine, I'd look around for a more experienced shop. Only so many ways to fit/attach headliner, after all. Cheers, Rich
The shops all have extensive upholstery experience just not on Ferraris of this vintage. There seems to be a paucity of expertise. Even here.
I haven't had my GT4 sunroof apart in a decade but IIRC, it (I am assuming that you mean the sliding part) has 2 rods supporting the fabric, front and rear. It was not hard to remove the sunroof (again my memory is poor), once out it is easy to see how it is constructed.
I scrounged around for some old photos of my sunroof, I can't remember exactly how it came out but it wasn't hard to do. The headliner is supported by a rod across each end, the front clips to the front of the sunroof inner structure and the back, IIRC, into the lift mechanism. Remove the bezel around the handle and with the sunroof slide back some you can disengage the front of the headliner by pulling down to disengage the wire clips from the square holes then rotate the front of the headliner down and unhook the wire from the "clip" on the sunroof inner structure. With the headliner hanging down you can access the lift/slide mechanism. I think that I removed the screws that hold the sunroof to the lift/slide mechanism (2 screws per bracket, 4 brackets) but I am not sure. The headliner tension is only controlled by the tension of the wire spring clips, it is not otherwise supported and they do hang down with age. The lift mechanism is somewhat ingenious with the handle rotating a shaft on each side of the sunroof. The shaft has 2 white plastic cam lobes that push down on the sunroof drain pan (part of the roof) to lift the sunroof up into the closed position. Kind of like doing a push-up. While you are in there it is a good idea to check the 6 water drains for obstructions. They run down the A,B and C pillars on each side. I found that my B pillar drains ended inside the rear fender panel by the back seat, a rust promoting design. I also found that one C pillar drain was melted shut from an engine compartment fire sometime in my car's life. I apologize for not being more helpful, it has been a long time since I removed my sunroof. I hope these photos will be helpful. Actually I had labels on the photos but the Attachment Manager picked up the original photos and I couldn't edit them in my post. The first photo is the passenger side. You can see the brackets that hold the lift mechanism and the white plastic lift toggles. 2nd photo shows the front edge of the sunroof inner structure, the 2 square holes and raised "clip". The squarish part of the bent wire in the 3rd photo slides into the clip and the ends of the bent wire snap into the square holes. Of course the third photo is the front of the headliner, the hole in the fabric at the right of the photo is for the handle. The fourth photo is the rear edge of the headliner, the wire clips into the lift/slide mechanism if I remember correctly. I added 3 photos. !st shows the rear lift toggle and slide pad (white rectangle) that supports the sunroof while sliding. 2nd shows the front lift toggle and slide pad and also the two brackets from the other side. 3rd shows the pan that forms the "slot" that the sunroof slides into (like sliding a letter into an envelope). The headliner over the rear seat is glued to the pan. The pan takes up the space that is used on the non sunroof cars for the rear interior light. The headliner is a vinyl sheet with heat embossed fake pleats and some padding. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
