http://www.nagtroc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21640 Side by side pictures. And a nice write up from the GT3 owner.
THe gt3 might be a nice car, but it is still very boring. The 911 is played out, kind of like Motorola and the RAZR. Too many different versions of them. There needs to be something new, in this case, the GTR, which IMO, looks much better then the 911.
If I were paying (assuming I could afford both with equal ease), between a Porsche GT3 and a Nissan GTR, I'd choose the GTR. Of course, if someone else were buying, it'd be the GT3 (of course!) The only Porsche I'd get every time, without hesitation (if $$ were no object) would be the CGT. That's a phenomenal car. Wonder how the upcoming Nismo or V-spec or whatever-they're-calling-it-GTR will fare against the CGT?
I was never a huge fan of the GT3 when it came out with the 996. The 993 GT2, 996 GT2, and upcoming 997 GT2 will always be among my favorites. The GT3 RS is pretty nice, though.
I suspect Nissan would give their proverbial right arm to have the cred and sales of a 911...ANY 911 with their GTR.
I totally disagree, I think the GT3 looks like a work of art, Sexy. The Nissan looks like a Mitsubishi, Common, boring and typical Japanese styling. No doubt the Nissan is fast, but their will always be someone faster. Porsche is like Ferrari to me, There cars with soul.
AMEN Mojo, I could not have said it better. Art, Soul, Spirit. I don't get that w/ the Asian brands...others obviously do, but I don't. They remind me of a toaster. Yes, it is functional, but do you long to have one??? NO! Honda, Nissan, et. al. have their own design philosophy and it just does not suit me. YMMV. James
Well, a lot of F-car owners feel exactly the same way about Porsches i.e. they lack "art, soul, spirit", etc. Toaster? I distinctly remember one Fchatter referring to the drone of a flat 6 as akin to a "chainsaw". But no flame intended to you personally. To each his own, YMMV, etc. etc. The important thing is that Jap supercars can never again be dismissed out of hand.
No flame taken. I totally get it. Everyone has "their" car or their "marque" if you will. I am a car guy...PERIOD! BUT, they must not only be competent, they must also stir the soul and please the eye. I keep forgetting to mention that before I got into 928's I was SERIOUSLY looking for a 300ZX! Like the 928 I still think they have a VERY timeless design, I also like the last of the Supra Turbo's (and non turbo's from an asthetic point of view). So, I am not anti-Japanese cars, just anti-ugly cars and that is completely subjective to my point of view and taste (or lack of as some have said). I can't really imagine anyone thinking that a Porsche (well, not all of them of course, but MOST ALL of them) don't have art, soul or spirit. Again to each his own. Probably the people that feel/believe that leave their Ferrari parked in the garage surrounded by velvet ropes so anyone that comes over won't touch or breath on it. You even see some of that from Porsche owners, but damn if I don't get that! Freaking DRIVE THEM LIKE YOU STOLE THEM! They are cars! They are AWESOME PERFORMING CARS! Enjoy! If you are looking for an investment buy a mutual fund, stock, or gold...drive your cars! Buy them a few years old put 15k miles on them over 3-5 years and if you just take decent care of them you will probably be able to get most all of your money back out of them AND have some awesome memories and enough money to go buy another newer one! YMMV! James
I would take the GTR over the Porsche any day of the week. Porsche is way behind the curve in transmission technology with no TC or SMG offered on any of it's cars...the antiquated 3 pedal system is for NASCAR wantabees...most all other type racing has gone to high tech auto-manual type systems from WRC, F1,LeMans,...even NHRA drag cars...the tarted up Beetle a/k/a 911 is for old farts having a midlife crisis...
AMEN to that!. I never fancied the looks of those things regardless of how fast they can be id rather have a Viper or Corvette than a 911. I would definately take a GTR over a GT3.
Coming from a Ferrari owner that is something. I don't think there is a more iconic midlife crisis than a Ferrari, it is just that there are more midlifers that can afford a 911. Though now that I think about the Vette is actually even MORE SO than a 911 or a Ferrari. Damn bow tie cars! Franklin you must be referring to the older 911's. My mom does not like them for that same reason. Of course she is old and remember the early versions for which that was really a good argument. The current crop, and frankly from about the early 70's on, they have hardly even looked like a Beetle... But I suspect you are just trying to get a rise out of the P-car fans here. Of course my preferred P-car flavor, while never the popular car here in the USA, has never had any thing in common or looked anything like any other car ever made. BTW, love the BB512's and the TR6 you have listed in your profile! SWEET! You have had some nice cars, but you ought to try a P-car at some point. They really are nice these days and better build quality than any of the F-cars I have seen of late (I have NOT seen a 599 or 612 in person). Best, James
Except that I got my first Ferrari over 20 years ago...way before I reached mid-life. I did once own a Porsche 993 coupe and it was an OK car...just now what I had thought it would be based on all the 911 hype...I would much rather have an M3...
There are exceptions to all the rules. I guess I was 32 when I got my first Porsche...that was 11 years ago. Not sure what you were looking for, but I really do like the 993, but a good friend of mine like his '88 911 better than the 993 he later bought. Was the 911 to raw? They are much less posh than an M3...cheaper though. I was never a fan of the early 911 interiors. I did like the gauge cluster, but not the ancillary controls. They should have taken what they learned from the 928's interiors and adapted that to the 911's in my opinion. Ultimately they did learn that, all you have to do is look at the Boxster or the 997's to see it. You know I am just a car guy. I like cool good looking cars and they have to be both. I am not a big fan of the sharp creases (hence not caring for the look of the GTR that started this thread, nor pretty much any of the current crop of BMW's), I like a little softer look. The car pictured above as I am typing this is a Ferrari GTO...THAT is a BEAUTIFUL CAR! Best to you all! James
Well I have both a moded 997s (supercharged 530hp), that is faster then my 430 was, and 605hp M6, it is an amazing car (95% of what my 575 was), and I am 2nd on the list to pick up the V10 version of the R8. I've owned 39 Porsches, 4 Ferraris, 16 BMW's 2 Maserati's a few vettes, muscle cars, etc, and you know what I loved them all while I owned them. Who cares what label is on the car as long as you enjoy it when you can. Funny thing is now that my tein boyes are 3 1/2, I seen to care less and less about cars.
GT3 looks so much better. GTR apparently can kick its but, too bad it looks like a Altima. I'd get a used 996GT2 for this kind of money.
How can you guys say that the 40+ year old VW looking 911 looks better than the high tech GTR! The 911 looks like a Beetle and sounds like a Beetle...yuk yuk yuk...
