With the advent of the new RS, after testing it, more are realizing the significance of the end-of-an-era 997 4.0 RS. Total 911 magazine recently drove the iconic Mezger-engined car, and editor Lee Sibley proclaimed: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just got back from Le Mans, what an amazing race! Too bad one of the RSRs burned so quickly into the race, but Balance of Performance didn't favour them this year, anyway. At the end of the day, everyones focus was on the 919, and they didn't disappoint. These 991 GT3 RS' were in a Porsche compound. Saw a couple of 3.6 RS cars around the circuit, and got my first close up look at the new Cayman GT4, too. If you've never been to Le Mans, go. It was an incredible experience. I managed to be awake for 19 hours of it, and Radio Le Mans got me caught up as soon as I woke up Sunday morning. Image Unavailable, Please Login

I think this 2011 Porsche Ag promo image is a PR faux pas, because the car that should have been paired with the 4.0 for the press image should have been the RSR (images below) from which it was directly inspired, and not the R! Joe, can you elaborate on your thinking. To my mind, the 4.0 RS is most closely related to the Cup car, the R and RSR being far more extreme variants with modifications a road car wouldn't have.
Happy to. GT program boss Andreas Preuninger is on record to clarify that the 4.0 RS was not even a planned car, it was an unofficial factory hot-rod dream of his that Porsche Ag's board of directors surprisingly signed off on. The basis for the car's creation? He says it was the the success of the bulletproof RSR 4.0 engine, so the 4.0 RS is inspired directly by the 2010 RSR. Furthermore, bear in mind that it is the only RS road car with engine components directly from the Homologated race-car, in this case engine intake components and, most importantly, the heart-and-soul of the RSR's engine, the RSR's crankshaft. Not a crank similar to the RSR's crank, or a crank copied to RSR specs, but the actual RSR unit with the very same Porsche Ag part number! Porsche's estimated 500 bhp output is thought to be very conservative, and Hartmut Kristen (Head of Porsche Motorsport) confessed in a recorded interview that the power available if run without an air-restrictor is 540-550 bhp. You'll notice that some 4.0 RS owners run license plates that have "RSR" references, and the aforementioned is the reason. Unfortunately, a lot of this information has been overlooked by most, and it appears its only shared by 'insiders'. Hope this helps. PS - Preuninger also says "The 600 cars were sold-out on 14 days". If true, the last time that happened was the launch of the famed 2.7 RS. Image Unavailable, Please Login
