Still finding time to work on the '76 308 GT4 (the infamous craigslist car). Welded the rear header, but it sounds like the front might have a bad leak too.

Has anyone had success pulling a GT4 front header (the one to the front of the car) with the engine still in the car ? Any tips or tricks would be very much appreciated. I'd guess that it would have to be done all from underneath. (I have the car at home now -- if it was back at the shop, I'd simply throw it on the lift and check.)

    Cheers,
    Sam

    Hi
The good news: Removal of engine is not required. You will however have to remove the RH fuel tank and water pipe. I don't recall if I removed the alternator or not. Expect to do a lot of wiggling to get the header out of its spot once unbolted. I did mine on axle stands, my neck muscles are now much stronger as a result!

Some of the work can be done from above, get a 13mm S or C shaped wrench. And some long extensions for the socket when working from underneath. My car is Euro so the header sheid came off with 4 bolts. If it is the US encased one, then access is tighter. First time took me 5 hours, fourth time I was down to 2 hours :-( After several attempts to repair, it would just start leaking somewhere else. The solution was a stainless header from Superformance.co.uk. Fit was perfect (for my 1976 Euro).
