My car has been VERY dry since I bought it over a month ago (no leaks at all). However, the last couple of days I noticed a bit of a drip on the ground. I looked at it today, found some wet spots on the fins of the gearbox cover. I wiped everything off and went for a 2 hour drive. I came home, everything was dry. Waited about an hour for things to cool off and looked under the car. Sure enough, the floor was wet under the clutch housing drain plug and below the gearbox cover. The fins were wet from the gearbox drain plug back, so I'm assuming the fluid was seeping from the drain plug and collecting at the low point of the fins then dropping to the floor.

Everything seems tight, and once I wiped off the wet spots no more fluid leaked out after the cool down period.

I've driven the car every day, which I know is more than the previous owners used it. Is it normal for these plugs to leak due to differing rates of contraction/expansion between the plug and covers after a good workout or should I pull the plugs, drain everything, re-tighten and start fresh?

    Hi Robert,

Not normal for them to leak.

Could it be coming from the breather valve?

I used to have a leak from the breather valve, due to overfilling of the gearbox, which is apparently something that mechanics did on these cars as a matter of course.

See the following thread from the archives (note that it reads from bottom to top), where Ferrarifixer explains the procedure:

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Dom,
I'll check that out. Just so I'm not asking later, what dia. & type of hose did you use for the mod.

    Thanks again,

Okay, the old flashlight thru the rear wheel shows fluid at the base of the breather valve stem, a bit around the cap, and some down the clutch housing. Not as much as was on the floor, but I'm assuming that's the culprit. At least I'm not that concerned about low fluid level now.

I'll clean everything off, take her for a spin tomorrow and see if it's wet at the cap again.

Let's see, Mark Spencer did the work on your's before you bought it too, right?
Maybe the overfill is his way of making sure we're paying attention (or at least driving the cars). :)

    Thanks Dom.
