After years of working surprisingly well my LH headlight pod has now developed a strange habit. When I turn the the lights on it goes up, then down, then up and stays up. The RH light pod goes up and stays up.

When the LH pod stays up it is also a centimeter or two lower than it should be, and the headlight aims too low.

Any idea where I should start looking first?

    Many thanks as usual

Check the Relay. There are many gremlins possible, but the Relay for the left Headlight-Motor is mostly possible the reason for that habit.

Have a look on eurospares web site as there is a good diagram of the headlight lifting levers. There looks to be an adjustable link which might be coming loose or there may be some type of limit switch on the motor or gearbox. You might just have a bolt coming loose, but the diagram shows it in great detail

Mine does weird stuff like that too. I just try to not drive at night. I'm guessing it's a weak ground.

If I remember correctly, the motors are the same as the fiat X1/9 and are easy to repair. Just open the gearbox case and clean out the old grease. It becomes electrically conductive with metal particles after many years and will cause the symptoms you described. There are brass contacts inside that assist in the raising/lowering and precision placement. Replace with fresh grease and you should be good.

Thanks fro the help guys. I dont see an external limit switch so I guess it must be in the gearbox. Also the actuating arms are a fixed length, so I'm not sure how to make LH and RH the same height, there is 20mm difference in height. The actuating arms seem to be at maximum lift when the lamp is up, I think it might just be a worn pivot point. Will let you know if I find anything of interest!
