Gt4 lost reverse

Look up 'shift shaft alignment' and you will get tons of threads with procedures and photos. I personally prefer to remove the gearbox drain pan so that I can perfectly adjust the shifter but others do it with the pan in place which gets you very close.

 

I advise pulling the pan as well. The shaft that the selector fork rides on is smooth and the fork can move around over time. Open it up and set it right. It just makes the car better.

 

Properly adjusted will smooth out shifting especially when used with a high quality synthetic gear oil. Everyone has their opinion on what they like so pick your favorite and you'll be fine.

 

Plan on replacing the two silentbloc rubber bushings if you haven't already. They might be the real culprit to begin with as they degrade. But lining everything up with shot bushings is a frustrating waste of time. Either the stock or Unobtanium versions will be a big improvement over 30 year old rubber bits.

Cleaning out and lubricating the shifter box resulted in a surprising decrease in shifting effort on my car.

 

Once I lost reverse too and found out that the nut for one of the bolt going through the silent block had came off. The shifting was very sloppy and would not go in to reverse. I replace the nut and all is good, been 8 years now.

 

I lost my shift a few yrs back it was also stiff to change. Came down to the bushing failure. So replaced with nylon ones I made myself and also took pan off and set up correctly, check clutch was ok. New gasket and refill with Redline. Now have great changes inc cold 2nd one. Plenty of threads with picture to set up shifter alignment. Though did have partner's help to change through gears whilst I watch the selector work in box as a check before re assemble.

 

While you are there ....

1) Get the parts diagram

2) Pull the consol and both pans

3) Change all the silent blocks in the shift shaft and both O-Rings in the pans.

4) Readjust the shift fork and tighten

5) Buy and install the after market oil baffle.

6) Close it all up.

Good for the next 30K+ miles.
