As always buy the best car you can afford, a cheap GT4 is just as expensive to fix as a 308/328. I would recommend an early euro car or the earliest US car (better cams). A PPI is a must from a reputable Ferrari mechanic. You want to know what you're getting into. Once these cars are sorted they are a dream. Unfortunately many are abused and misused and hence are not the performers they could be. Watch for rust in the lower doors and wheel arches. Check the fuel hoses and coolant hoses, they may look okay on the outside but be prepared to change every rubber hose on the car, remember they are over 30 years old now! You will love the GT4, the sound the go-kart handling and the option to put small people in the back seat! I'll let others tell of their experiences, I've loved mine. I'm looking for a GT4 as well and saw one for sale with exactly these rust problems. Reason enough to run away?
No since almost every Ferrari before 1984 rusts in the same way and the same places so you are effectively saying no to buying a GT4 or GTB/S etc etc at all

Any 30 year old car is likely to have problems. It's important to be able to put the problems into perspective when evaluating a GT4. Bodywork shouldn't be any more expensive than any other old car - though often the quotes will be! The cars are comparatively simple to work on compared to a modern car, so replacing rubber pipes etc isn't too bad. The main problem is prices of parts specific to a Ferrari. So things like engine and gearbox rebuilds are lots of $$$. Check out parts prices on http://www.ferrarispares.co.uk/308_gt4_1.html to get an idea. Parts directly from Ferrari UK are actually quite reasonable also, but their online parts catalogue seems to have been removed a while ago?
I would never sell mine, she is a dream to drive, costs hardly anything to keep and maintain. It does help that I spent 30 years in the motor trade and do everything myself. It takes hardly any room in the garage. On top of all that the value is going up, very slowly! Its the perfect car for me!!!!
