I just got off the phone with the seller, he cancelled our meeting for tomorrow and thinks he's going to sell it out of state so he doesn't have to deal with the Cali smog test. He has two people interested in the car (any of you guys in Washington or Georgia looking at a GT4?). I told him I would take resposibility for having it smogged and would hand him cash first thing Monday morning. He's gonna see what the other guys do first and get back to me later this week.....
    AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

Item number: 4550204310 on ebay motors. Looks nice, only 2days left. would'nt hurt to check it out. It's in 1000 oaks Cali. There is also a white/black boxer paint scheme one too, also in Cali. Looks pretty nice too. Of course allways have a PPI done at a Reputable shop of your choise before final purchace.

I'm confused, what does he care about the emitions? Would'nt that be your consern? Why would that stop you from at least test driving the car? Seems kinda odd to me.

In California it's the seller's responsibility to get the car smogged for a sale. Of course if the buyer waives it to close a deal, no problem.

.... so, it must have passed the smog test for it to be licenced now correct? Seems like he should still let you test drive it. There is no guarentee the out of staters will come thru. Does'nt seem wise on his part. Hope it all works out for you. Don't let this person discourage you in your quest. There are more good GT/4's out there.

    Good luck!

What year is the car? 1975 and earlier cars are exempt from the smog test.

    Yeah, I know. It's a '79.
We'll see what happens with the other guys. I hate to be a jerk about it, but after offering him cash, if he comes back in a few days and says the other guys changed their minds, I'm looking at dropping the offer.
To me, cash from someone standing in front of them beats interested out of staters who haven't seen the car every time. Maybe that's just me.

I'm now wondering why he's so conserned about the emissions test. Seems to me If he's got a buyer with cash who is ready to deal, and he waits for a couple maybe's. Something may be wrong with the car? If he decides to deal with you afterall and balks at letting you PPI the car or try's to rush you. I'd be very cautious. May as well keep looking for other options for yourself. I went thru a similar deal with mine in a way. Only I was offering less for the car than he was asking, other potential buyers who were going to give full price kept popping up then not following thru. Finally after a month or so he finaly said OK, and did not hesitate to take the car for a PPI. (at my expense of course) and everything eventually worked out. Be patient. If its ment to happen with this car it will.

    Kurt,
His comments were that with California's new emmisions test it would be very difficult for the car to pass. This is true with almost any car of that age, I recently sold a 6.6 litre Trans Am, and it took a lot of tweaking to get it to pass. This was a very strong, clean car. By making a sale out of state he doesn't have to worry about the hassle.

Now, passing up on a sale where the buyer is willing to take on the responsibility, and is fully informed of the trouble it may take to get it to pass is another thing.

Here's a link to the car. I'm sure some of you have seen it, or know the car. Any comments?

    The quest continues I guess....

Just have an out-of-state friend, or fellow F-chatter sign as the buyer, and then sell again to you. Tell the buyer not to fill in the "buyer" portion on the title transfer.

Car dealerships do this, and call it an in & out. When a buyer has a private buyer for a car they want to trade, the dealership takes the sale, then sells it to the private buyer that was lined up by the new car buyer - then it looks like a trade, and the new car buyer saves the taxes on the trade value.

Does he have the original drivers seat? I'm not too sure about the black racing seat. If your ok with it thats cool. You should take a look at the ones on ebay. The black one is really sharp.

    Kurt,
Yes he has the original seat. I'm not a big fan of the racing seat he installed for that car. I was thinking I could sell/trade it for a more appropriate style racing seat and hold onto the original driver's seat so that it wasn't being worn.

    Lusso5,
Thanks for the tip. It's worth looking into.

Hey Kurt, you're a fellow F-chatter who's out of state......

Having owned a GT4 several years ago, I can say they are great cars. I had mine in Texas where no smog rules applied at the time. It was a 1975 model, and easy to update to later model specs (AC, cooling, spark plug boots etc).
The I moved to California and got a 1977 308 GTB in the early 90´s, I will NEVER have another carbed Fcar in California to smog. Too much difficulty even when the motor was just right.
IMHO, hold out for ´75 car. They don´t have air pumps, cat converters, slow down lights etc and with the 1975 year limit, you should be in good shape to avoid emissions testing.

i think you are on to something. wait, and buy when you are ready. i have looked into a few 308gt4's, but i have other things going on now. they are on my "to obtain" list. i wonder if the out of state buyers are not going to come see the car or have a shop do a PPI? perhaps something is not as it should be, and you have come across as a "smart" buyer' so he would rather not deal with you. buying and selling thses things can be difficult for both sides involved. i wish you luck with your hunt.
