Of course it comes as no surprise to those of us who are lucky enough to own them, but the Dino GT4 seems to be every magazine's favourite at present. Octane, an enjoyable read, wisely ( and maybe slightly controversially:)) reports:

"Back then, the 308GT4 didn't really catch on. Yet today, compared with the faddish garnish of the narcissistic 308GTB, its blunt straightforwardness speaks of connoisseurship - a car appreciated for what it is: a pure thing. It's not only a lot cheaper than a 308GTB; some say it's better."

Mind you the short piece did start out by calling it "cloddishly angular" !

Meanwhile...the discovered section in Classic Cars has pictures of an unsalvageable GT4 in the Bahamas-a rusty, but complete wreck. And you can lust after the awesome ex Joe Walsh Maser 5000GT - you know the one that "does one-eighty-five, I lost my license now I don't drive...etc"

I agree with you there, Alan. Why diss another car to make a point? Rooting for the underdog? Sure enough the GT4 handles better than its' shorter sibblings, but the qualifications in the article are just, well, not very bright.

On the other hand, it is a good thing that history repeats itself, and that a previously overlooked Ferrari, pardon me, Dino, is getting attention it deserves, and I seem to note that prices are getting more serious as well for good and exceptional examples.

Against what everybody else predicts, this will happen for good and exceptional GTB's and GTS's as well. There are too many poor and neglected cars on the market.

The Gt4 is a great driving car, I like the looks as well, so give it its' due!

If finances permitted, is it worth having a GT4 and a 328? Are they different enough to justify, or would you think it's better having something totally different like my M3?

    Cheers,

    Bob.

    Truly wonderful machinery..............

I've had my 328 for 2 and a half years now and I still can't take my eyes off it.
It is the most timeless shape.

I put some fuel in mine earlier today and a guy filling up AMG Benz came over and asked what year model it is. I told him 1989...... He said, You mean 1999? I replied No..... 1989!

He then went on to say "so your saying the car is 22 year old this year"

I replied with Yep.... That's EXACTLY what I'm saying.

He was dumbfounded, he couldn't believe it was that old. I remember when these cars were new and they were probably more beautiful compared with alternatives than a F430 or even the 458 is today.

I desperately want to love the GT4 like I love my 328 and I'm still just struggling a little with the angular shape. That said it's been growing on me slowly be surely over the last 2+ years......
    Cheers,

    Bob.

308 GT4 vs. 308 GTB = salty carbs vs. sugary sweets or similar comparisons.

Different, and each has its own faction. There is nothing wrong with liking one
over the other. To me, they're BOTH great - if I had my way, I'd have every sort
of F-car ever made in my garage and love them all. I chose a 328 GTS, as I only
have one slot and it was my first choice. But they're ALL great and each has its fans.

Interesting, but I would certainly follow with Jedi and just have one of each if I could. My slots were also limited, so I took my first Ferrari love - the 308 GTS (mine is a QV, but I would have taken any of the above).

i had a gt4, and a carb GTB at the same time once....... i think adding a QV to the trio, and a 911 Carrera, would make the perfect poor mans car collection. throw in an old Z28 or Trans AM, and you have my whole childhood box set!!! :)

You are in a very small percentage of the population if you have even one Ferrari -- never mind that its a "lowly" Dino GT4.

In the UK, GT4 prices are doing really well against a generally falling market for classic cars. A good GT4 isn't much cheaper than a GTB and sometimes more expensive than a 2v injected GTB. I personally prefer the looks of the GTB, but the GT4 has advantages in space and handling.

Is it worth having a 328 GTS and GT4 at the same time?

    Sam's opinion: absolutely!

The 328 and GT4 are totally different beasts in every possible sense. The steering (and steering wheel) feel, the pedal feel, the view and perception of speed, the handling dynamics, g-forces, way you sit in the car...the differrences are endless. Plus if you pop the targa off the 328 GTS you add the open vs. closed cockpit difference. The 328 is pure 1980s (which feels like 1990s version Beta 1.0), while the GT4 is very 1970s (which is 1950s v9.0).

Whereas I would never suggest a Triumph TR4 and TR6 at the same time, 1968 Corvette and 1981, or even '70s 911E and 80s Carrera, the 328 and GT4 might have well been made by totally different companies for the world of difference in driving experience.

Tough question Bob..as lm not sure on the answer...a few weeks back l got to drive my old GT4 for an hour while my friend drove my 328...as much as l loved the sound of the GT4 and the drive was fantastic...the carb fumes were getting to me as well as the much heavier clutch pedal as well...if you are asking if finances were unlimited,,,then of course yes but if you had a spare 45-50k to spend then not so sure...l really think that after the novelty wears off you wont drive the GT4 nearly as much...but in saying that..l cant really think of another car in that price range that l would rather have..possibly a 66 Alfa romeo SS..http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-abc/Alfa-Romeo-Giulia-SS-Sprint-Speciale-ra-lr.jpg

cool write up, but may i suggest you check your jetting? 4 of my 5 308s have been carb cars, and properly set up, they do not and should not smell like fuel in the cabin, nor from behind. true, they will not be as clean as a modern car with cats and fuel injection, but if it makes your eyes water, and you cant breathe, then its a bit " too rich ".

    LOL :) :)

We have the same ideas I think. I'm lucky enough to have a 78 GT4 and an 88 328 only snag being that they're on different sides of the world - in all senses of the word! I love them both but the GT4 makes the best noise and is definately the sharper of the 2 to drive. Light and quick and just a great car. Looks the dogs IMHO too.

Have a 94 911 too but thats a whole other story. I really hope I never have to sell any of them as they all matter in their own different ways.

    Your Uk reg'd 1978 GT4 looks lovely - same colour as my 1980 GT4!

I can't compare with another 308 but my GT4 seems as sharp to drive as my S3 Elan.
