Can anyone help me: My 288GTO backfires when i put the peddle down It seems like the higher the RPM the more it does it. Is it a timing thing or a injector thing. It sound more like a firecracker backfire than a gurgling popping sound. (does that make any sense?) It has been sitting for a while. The plugs have been cleaned and regapped.

Could be a lot of things. Sitting is very bad for the injector nozzles. Weber Marelli FI fuel delivery authority is heavily weighted to the throttle pot. That could get dirty and cause the issue. Could be fuel pressure. Whatever it is a lean issue is high on the list and can be rapid death to a turbo motor. I wouldn't be driving it until it is fixed. That engine management system is very different than anything else Ferrari used. Get it to someone really up to speed on 288 and F40.

Ditto. Don't drive it until you get that sorted.

Flames out the pipes on the over-run is one thing, but this is def. not good.

Is it a backfire with a real bang? Mine had an overboost problem because of the wastegate diaphram going which caused a long project to rebuild the wastegate. Symptom was, lots of power, wheelspin then a sudden loss of power and a pop (as opposed to a loud bang with a backfire) as the wastegate decided to dump boost late (this is of course also super bad for the engine if you drive through it!).

I also think an expert is a good call at this point!

I experienced that on an F40 I had. But this, The GTO will go back in the shop today. I was hoping i'd finish the fuel that is in there (less than quarter tank) and put mix 100 + 91 octane. But to be safe i'll be taking it in today. Thank you for all your input.

The Tech told me that the injectors are clogged and instead of some spraying, they were dripping and that is what is causing the backfires. I really don't understand tech talk but there was more to it. So A few CLEAN tank fulls later and a few bottles of Techtron and it should go away. It has gotten a bit better. I'll update you... a few tank fulls... That's take a WHILE considering how often I drive this car.

Armen, why cant they hook up to the fuel rail and run fuel injection cleaner through while the car is running? this is a standard procedure.

also i would hope they would have changed the fuel filter(s) as well. the 288 is my favorite ferrari, and i would think as rare and special as they are, the shop would take extra care to ensure the engine is not damaged.

no way would i " drive it " to make it better. especially given your lack of time to drive it regularly. ( need a volunteer?) :)

they need to clean the fuel system, or i respectfully suggest you find a different shop.

One more question. as my friend followed me home yesterday. He said I was shooting flames out the exaust. The scary part is, He said the flames WEREN'T going away!!!! What the hell is that????? Now that scares me. I am running higher octane: 94ish. With a bottle of Techtron. I'm really not too technical.

A bottle of Techron is not going to fix your car. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Unburnt Gasoline passing into the exhaust system and igniting.

Under hard driving when suddenly backing off from high revs a touch of this is normal but as a constant thing NO. IMO you have a serious injector issue that needs to be cleaned up.

You may also have an oil leak in the turbo's into the exhaust system which can cause a serious fire.

These cars have to be driven regularly or real problems can develop.

Clean the injectors OUT of the engine until the spray pattern is right...

Or just put in new ones?????

Pretty important part of the show...

That much additive is gonna melt your fuel lines altogether....LOL!
Your inclination is right I don't think you can "drive it out" given light use...

    Road Trip!!....j/k.

Hard to believe they didn't pull/clean/bench test ALL of them...

My F40 sat for awhile and had dripping injectors. As others have said the cars do not like to sit with old fuel, they really need to be driven at least semi-regularly. I don't know about the 288 but the F40 also needs to come up to boost, because 8 of the injectors are used for boost only. Just idling it in the garage wont do it.

I came across a before/after pic from when my injectors were cleaned if it helps any.

I agree. This can be harmful to any non metal components in the fuel system.
I hear that the best way to clean the injectors is to use a special device that generates ultra sonic waves.
