... would you mind disclosing some more details, if you have any...?

I ask out of pure curiosity :) Those BMW-powered 'specials' are definitely not part of my curriculum, and it would be great to know more about their history.

That's right; a 1997 model. Later models have different designs and other engines.

The rather amusing car in the B/W photos, is it a Gregoire (by Alin & Liautard, 1911)?

Yes. It is a "Sous-Marin" special bodied Gregoire from 1911.

Helmut Polensky -- Monopol = Monoposto + Polensky

Helmut was a German champion of the 2-liter sports car class in 1939 racing a BMW 328. Postwar (1948) he built this rear engine project that was an assembly of VW (no shock tower) front suspension, BMW 328 engine and various bitsa VW/Mercedes/BMW parts within his own frame construction. Obvious inspiration being the Auto-Unions from pre-war. Middling success at best given the 328 engine (bearings) but it did win a race eventually. It was ran with full width bodywork as well at two events before being retired.

BMW hunter friend found most of the remnants of the Monopol decades ago and hopefully upcoming it will be restored and run again -- or at least for hill climb competition. He talked with Helmut on one occasion and learned a lot of various tidbits about the car which will be explained once it is finished and material published upon it.

Fortunately we have all the original build pictures (various stages of assembly) and complete pictures of it finished and competing.

    Not a Benz.

I know Wayne is busy with work, but I'd be interested on his ideas here, so don't want to give too many clues.

I'm happy if someone wants to post something else to keep the thread going. This car can wait in the come-back-to/to-do list ;)

To put this to bed. This is a Gregoire race car from 1911. Entered into the Grand Príx der leichten Wagen at Boulogne-sur-Mer. Driven and bodied(?) by Porporato.
