Graham leave those shops and get out in the water, surf is going to be good for the next few days!!!! That is the only good thing about Waikiki.
Yup, the best parts of the island are outside Waikiki. Renting a car and seeing the island will cost about the price of one dinner with the wife in Waikiki and will be much more memorable.
We hired a Jeep for 2 days and did the trip taking in lots of stops, food, swimming and just chilling. It's a such a great place once you leave the lights and people. I even went and did the real touristy thing and had a swim outside the old Magnum PI house. It's pretty run down now. I also learnt that when Magnum was swimming he must have been on his knees because it's too shallow to swim! That water is just insanely warm and clear. A very special place. But the highlight for me today was Pearl Harbour guys. Respect. What a moving place to visit. As a Kiwi I have been to Gallipoli and this drew the same feelings. Sad but momentous at the same time. Awesome.
The choices for surfing around Waikiki/Diamond head are incomparable, beginner, left, right, it's all right there..... but yeah, it's crowded and the bars are expensive.
Yep, the USS Arizona memorial is a must see when in The Islands. If you're still on Oahu, the Punchbowl - National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific - is also a worthy place to visit...T
