Three Americans are dead after their Gulfstream IV private jet crashes in the south of France.
The crew and passengers haven't been identified yet.
Not sure who owns the plane. No tail number visible in the crash pictures.
Not sure if one of the 3 people on board was a passenger or if all 3 were the crew (2 pilots and perhaps a flight attendant?).

Three Americans dead in private jet crash in south of France.

The entire crew of an American private jet was killed in the south of France today when it crashed on landing.
The twin-engined Gulfstream-IV came down at Castellet airport, between Marseille and Toulon, with all the victims believed to have died on impact.
They were described by an airport source as two men aged 24 and 61, and a woman aged 30. Nobody else was on board.

The jet, which was flying in from nearby Nice, split in two, with one half ending up in a nearby lake after narrowly missing a hotel.
Fire engines were called to the scene as the main cabin blazed on the runway, but nothing could be done to save those on board, said the same source.

‘It was an appalling accident – an investigation has already started,’ said the source, who said the accident happened at around 3pm.
He added: 'All the victims are American passport holders.'

Castellet International Airport was built by the late French pastis tycoon Paul Ricard in 1962.
It is the largest private airfield on the French Riviera, and frequently used by celebrities with homes in the area, as well as business people.

the clam shells are in full reverse... split hull... is an indicator of approach / landing speed at the high side, brake failure ?, wind shear or reversal of direction creating a long landing...what ever the situation, they ran out of runway, were not able to stop...

typically anyone driving a G4 is on the top of their game, something went way wrong or perhaps a medical issue, at this level "ooops" does not happen,

Local city officials confirmed that three pilots were killed when a Gulfstream GIV crashed on landing at Le Castellet Airport (LFMQ) in the south of France. The accident happened at just before 3 p.m. local time on July 13.

A short statement from the prefecture of Le Castellet said that there were no passengers on board the long-range business jet and that the three killed were American pilots, two men (aged 24 and 61) and a 30-year-old woman. As of press time, no details about the airplane’s tail number or ownership were available.

Local media reports described witness accounts suggesting that the aircraft broke into two with one part ending up in a lake next to the airport and the other part catching fire. The reports, not confirmed directly by authorities, also said that there had been no passengers on board the flight, which was to reposition the aircraft from nearby Nice.

    She was a beautiful jet.
Tragic loss of both crew and plane.

I gather that this airport is rather close to the Paul Ricard racing circuit? Maybe the jet was the victim of the "mistral" wind that gave the circuit's long straight its name.

Got some tidbits today. The co-pilot was the regular co-pilot for this aircraft. The captain was a highly experienced contract person.

Aircraft allegedly was "hot" on approach and did not make first touchdown until well down the runway then had a significant bounce. Again, as alledged by the person in the conversation, completely clear and no significant wind condidtions.
