I returned late last night from Orlando, Florida where I was attending SHOT '09.
I figured I would buy myself a little souvenir, and came back with a full house custom from Steve Bailey.

Good news: I bought a new 1911 and got a free knife thrown in!

    Bad news: It wasnt cheap!

I have a very (unhealthy) obsession of buying expensive 1911s, with guns from Ted Yost and multiple Wilson Combats, Nighthawks, Les Baers, Ed Browns, etc.
Its a bad habit, but hey; at least I dont spend all my money on crack!

I stopped by the LTW booth at SHOT, and found this little beauty:

I came back with the leather and the knife, and should receive the Colt in the next week.

More good news: Steve did a matching Colt Detective Special with matching engraving from JR French.
It is having the ivory grips fitted, and will be available for me to purchase in the next 30 days.
Bad news? I need to dig deep and find another couple/three grand!

    Thanks

[good natured ribbing]James, come one man!! THE M1911 COLT .45???? and you dont recognize it?????[/good natured ribbing]

The Colt 1945 is the longest serving side arm in the US Military. A wonderful weapon and really a joy to shoot!

It and the M1 Garand pretty much won WWII

Joe, nice snag bro. $8k seems a tad steep but for a beautiful piece like that, just keep it and enjoy!

So you bought a Series 70 gun that was reworked, engraved & reblued by some outside source . And to top it off put a $8000 price tag on it. I personally would take a pre-series 70 National Match with factory engraving and ivory grips. But thats me. Then it would be documented from Colt and be in their records. Otherwise it is still a stock series 70, according to Colt. Its like taking a 308GTB and putting a body kit on it and calling it a 288GTO.

Cool catch. I just got a Yost Signature 1911 Series 80. . Never seen/felt a Steve Bailey yet. I'm trying to get Chen to make me one next. . . Did you see the CT Brian pair that he had there ? That one is nice as well. He says you need a matching pair to hold one in each hand. I told him I don't think my range allows me to do that. . . .

Hey as long as you feel good buying it, that is all that matters. I've commissioned to have SA's made by Colt in the past I personally like it real and documented. :D By the way who stores a gun with the hammer pulled back?

Not to be picky, but for 8 biggies I'm a bit surprised it doesn't have a target trigger since it has a lightened hammer and the custom grip safety.

Yeah, I played with that matched set from CT.
Spoke with him a bit on Sunday as well.

I am sending a very early Seattle built Detonics Combat Master to Ted Yost to see what he can come up with :)
Im sure that will be cheap! :)

Those old Gold Cup National Matches are really sweet, Its real hard to find the pre-70 stuff. I had one custom 1911 made about 14 years ago, but If I told you who built it and where, I would have to kill you. :D All I can say is the grips were made of the tape on the top of SkateBoards.

    That's some nice engraving.

I'm looking for the right handgun to buy so I can have it worked on (nickle plated and engraved). I really like the "banknote" style but other engravings are a possibility.

BTW, Joe, how was the Show? I was scheduled to attend but a priority...

    The show was very good.
I was pretty strung out going between meetings, being forced to drink lots of beer with friends, vendors, and customers, and having an all around good time. :)

We should set up a GTG next year in Vegas for SHOT '10.
I am a pretty big Bimmerforums member, and we have lots of serious car/gun guys there as well.

Perhaps we have a big "Fast cars, big guns, and hot women" event :)

    Tempting ;)

This year's SHOT was a half hour away... next year in 'Vegas? It's been awhile but I am way overdue for a return trip. Hmm...

daaaamn! that is a great collection! my Combat Commander was done in the 80's by Jarvis in California. i have the papers in the pile of reciepts, but nothing i have can compare to that collection you have!

i do love how and old Colt feels in the hand.

i LOVE the ( original) Single Action Army, but they are $$$$$ now.

can you imagine having a Colt from the 1873-1880's era!

    :)

guns , cars and guitars buddy
