Hello. I'm building a new house, and I'm interested in hiding a small safe in the wall near the bed for easy access to a pistol. I'm thinking something with a mechanical cipher lock, and hide it behind a picture. Has anyone done this? Any recommendations? Also, any advice on hinging a picture to cover it?
I don't want something necessarily large or fireproof. Just easy to get into (for me, not my kids). I am putting a regular large gun safe for the collection that I describe to my wife as, um, just a couple of old guns in the basement. Anything that needs fire protection can go there.

    Thanks!

Use a trigger lock and call it good..you'll never get the safe open in time should you find an intruder in your room...mine's just under the mattress, her side of course...HTH

I jus' push her to the floor, ("take cover honey") reach under and three seconds later we're blazing away with splatters EVERYWHERE!

Hadn't had any problems, once word gets around.......

If I was you I would use a 12 gauge with birdshot for home defense.

But if you must use a pistol this right here http://www.ftknox.com/pistol_box/ is a pretty small and easily hidden box.

    Gun?

Why do you need a gun?

    Try following this advice instead:

Identify the intruder and try to ascertain what societal pressures caused him, or her, to be forced to a life of crime.

Once this is established, try to build rapport with the intruder, suggest constructive ways in which he, or she, might express his, or her, frustration at the oppressive socio-economic system forced on him, or her by the industrial capitalist that cause poverty by their "slave labor' mentality.

At this point, try to find out if there is any form of substance abuse, either alcohol or drugs, that has gone untreated because of a total lack of concern by the government and medical establishment. Express your displease at the lack of entitled rights to such help.

If the unfortunate, oppressed victim, at this point request sexual intercourse with your wife (or with you), realize that this need has probably gone unfulfilled because of the lack of opportunity afforded this gentleman, or lady, by the corrupt and bigoted local industries, again, directed by the established capitalists. Therefore, do comply with said request, and do it like you mean it.

Now, any valuables should be offered as well as a nice sandwich, although, do try to avoid cheese unless you confirm your guest is indeed not lactose intolerant.

Prior to the departure of your new friend, do confirm that he, or she, is registered to vote, and if not offer your help in this registration process, as an election is coming up, don't you know.

    Now don't you feel better?

But you forgot to shoot the b@stard, to put them out of their misery!

Like ImpalaSS, I use a Remington 870 Wingmaster with a Police Riot barrel, 18", with a site bead on the end. (as if....).
I think it's legal in three states. I bought it new here in Texas

Just as you are handing him a cup of tea, jab him in the eye with a butter knife.
    Yes, I do feel better.
Every person should know how to protect themselves. Use of a gun is one way, if you are trained. You wouldn't try to roundhouse someone if you weren't trained.

And remember, if you hear the police, you still have time. It's when you can see the police that it's too late to finish him off.
    Here's to tryin'!
    Cheers!

yup, and a lot less likely to penetrate 2 sheet of sheetrock, therefore safer for everyone else in the house.

How about a 12 ga. Mossberg 590; 9 shot with ghost ring and heat shield on 18.5 inch barrel?

    Yeah, now I'm feeling better.

Seems like i read that #1 buck shot is actually the best defensive load, I think it is just larger than BB but much smaller than #0 buck (way smaller than #00Buck.)

A lot of great advice here. I'm not concerned with someone sneaking in my bedroom. Its the "Honey... do you hear something outside" comments. I really hate looking out the window of the house with a poolstick in my hand! When I go out to rescue the cat from the animal pursuing it, I'm leaning towards a 1911 or my 12 gauge. Police? We don't have any. I think there are 4 for my county. Rural America. :)

Uro, you forgot the final act of courtesy to the downtrodden intruder. In true liberal fashion, offer to give him a ride home in your '69 Oldsmobile.

Pistol versus long gun in home defense? They both have their pluses and minuses. The long gun can be a bit more difficult to move around a house with, and bring on target...it can also be more difficult in a "retention" or "gun grab" with an assailant. The pistol is much less powerful than a long gun, and no where near the "fight stopper", but is more compact, often times easier to manage moving through a house.

Bottom line, you probably don't want to be "searching" around your house with any gun. Better to lock the bedroom door, and call the police and let them do it, that's their job. Just make sure your bedroom door is solid core, has a dead bolt. Keep your cell phone next to your bed, and a spare house key with a cylume (glow stick) attached to it. Call the cops, tell them you have an intruder, and when they arrive, crack the cylume stick and toss it out the window for them.

Of course, you may have loved ones that need to be checked and brought to the bedroom, so you may have to move about the house...but no more than is necesssary.

There are websites that offer a lot more information, or you can attend a class on the subject.... :)

Why the key and lightstick? If there is an intruder, wouldn't the door/window already be open?

Maybe, , maybe not...perhaps they gained entry through a second floor window...are you to expect the cops to do the same? Or would you prefer them to breakdown your door? :)

It's GEMTECH...call them, ask for "Kel".

Skip 9mm and get a 5.56 suppressor. Rifles have way more velocity and energy. M4 96D...it rocks!

(I find my 44 mag, 45SS, or 40 cal. Glock work best)
