You both seem wrong to me - Gutierrez has been rumored for months and only Grosjean was confirmed last week with supposition Gutierrez would be announced at Mexico eg last month Or James Allen back in May was mentioned here too
To be honest, Gutierrez didn't impress much during his one year at Sauber, so I don't see what the fuss is about. Magnussen would have been a better prospect, but we may loose him to F1, I am afraid.
Why? To attract sponsors? Surely a sponsor wants the best affordable/available driver, rather than one chosen for its origins, no?
The best way to attract sponsors for a new team, is to convince a highly experienced driver with a good track record to join; sometimes someone towards the end of its career. Walter Wolf did that when he took on Jody Schekter. He had McLaren and Tyrrell experience, and a few wins under his belt. That's also how Mateschitz recruited Coulthard to launch Red Bull years ago. He had driven and won for Williams and McLaren. Gene Hass should have gone after Jenson Button when McLaren wouldn't commit, or even Raikkonen when he was still in limbo at the Scuderia. Grosjean is just acceptable as a team leader.
I could be wrong but I believe he's more experienced than a couple of recent rookies. He would have been perfect to get into the Ferrari driver stable.
Which Grand Prix sold out (and in days); Mexico or USGP ? Mexico has money. I'll bet Gutierrez is bringing some. PS he was fine as a driver.
Gutierrez also brings Slim´s money along. Ferrari sports a Telcel decal on the rear wing courtesy of the Mexican connection. If Guti moves to Haas we will for sure come with $.
I get that and dont doubt it but it got me wondering: Does that make him a pay driver? I always thought the kids of the super rich (or even Lauda and MS for example for their first rides) are actually buying a seat and thus are pay driver. OTOH a guy like Gutierrez brings a sponsor to the team who pays for his logos on the car but the driver doesnt pay and instead actually gets a (minimal) salary from the team. Yes/No/maybeso?
If the sponsoring company is owned or controlled by a member of the driver's immediate family - he's a pay driver.
