So 2 months after I bought the 308 the fuel pump failed 25 feet out of my driveway...not a real breakdown. 2 summers ago I blew a H2o belt 3 blocks priors to the inlaws...not a real breakdown. Tonight, fuel pump failed in the middle of town miles form any real "safe haven". Had to call the Father-in-law (who already gives me a hard time for the unreiliable ferrari) and we tow strap towed it a couple of miles back to the house....my first real stranding in 5 years. It's a strange sensation sitting in traffic, in a Ferrari (without the engine running) as everyone looks to see what's going on...........good times=)
I ran out of gas on a hill at a long stop light once on the way to a gas station. I was blocking traffic and unfortunately it was junior high traffic at 3:15 in the afternoon. Talk about getting noticed.
Two fuel pump failures in 2 years. What is going on with your fuel pump? Did the pump die or are you the victim of the bad Ferrari fuseblocks? Birdman
Pump is dead. After the first one failed I wired the new pump with an in-line fuse to a tab (which is key activated) in the engine compartment. I don't know the technical name, but its' the area from which the dizzys draw spark...ignitional modules maybe? My theory was to eliminated the fuse panel/relays altogether (which I upgraded about a year after too). Had been working just fine but perhaps 5 years is getting to the end of it's usefull life. Anyone happen to know the entire bosch # for the pump? All I can come up with is #69523. If I try to source one with just that here at the local auto stores I don't think I'll have much luck and Ferrari is never in their database. My car is an 80, but I think probably 80-84 used the same pump.
ken is right... I had a 12 cyl jaguar and it would run like cr*p, then sometimes run great...sometimes would just die and not run at all then it would sit waiting for the tow and then the tow shows up and it runs great...anyway, it turns out the tanks had rust..had to replace the entire fuel sytem..two tanks, two pumps, hoses, 12 injectors... rust came just from condensation over the years have no idea why changing the filters regularly did not prevent this..also, the sealed canister type filters like on our f-cars..you can't see what is inside and if you are sucking up rusty fuel! On my xke..you would see everything that was going on in the sediment of teh glass bowl the filter sat in. I wonder if , given the age of the cars...a post mortem (cutting open the filters and examining them) might be a good practice. Or perhaps putting in-line a clear glass enclosed filter somewhere to easily examine the fuel.
