But not in Formula 1 but as a Mercedes DTM driver. ''Mika Hakkinen will make his comeback to full time car racing, not as a Formula One driver but as Mercedes DTM driver. The double F1 World Champion will race in the German touring car series next season. Earlier this month the Flying Finn tested a DTM car at the German track Oschersleben. Both parties seemed happy with Hakkinen's pace. Mercedes will reportedly offer Hakkinen a salary of 2 million euro per season. A final contract hasn't been signed yet, but should be concluded very soon. Mika Hakkinen won the Formula One title in 1998 and 1999 with Mercedes backed Formula One team McLaren. '' source:f1racing.net I'm happy for Mika but I thought he had a chance for the Williams BMW drive.
Apparently he's back on William's list http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=31477 I don't know if this would be a smart move for him. Hakkinen did beat Schumacher a couple of time for the championship but he's been away for already a few years.
Isn't there an old theory that once a driver (or motorcycle roadracer) gets married and has kids, they often "lose the edge", and are more hesitant about taking chances? Obviously there are exceptions (MS being a prime example). It was interesting that Hakkinen retired soon after his son was born. I'd love to see him back, IF he can still be competitive. A Webber/Hakkinen team at Williams would be awesome. I hope it happens.
Even here: http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/13664/ they`re talking about Hakkinen returning to F1. (in a Williams BMW) If I was Frank Williams I would go for it! He will have time to practice during the winter and I`m sure he will competitive for the upcoming season. But he has to want it.. If he is not motivated then there`s no reason to come back. Hakkinen to Williams please let it happen!
