I've had an issue pop up on two occasions and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced it or knows what to do about it. Twice now, once about 4 weeks ago and once yesterday, I was driving my 2004 360 Spider with the top down, no problem. But on these two occasions when I went to close the convertible top I held the switch to do so and the top only closed halfway. The cycle stopped right before the final "flip." The last action that occurred before the process stopped was the clasps that connect the convertible top to the body of the car popped out. Pictures show the position the top was stuck in. If I kept the switch depressed in the forward position (as you normally would to close the top) I heard a slight hum as if something is working, but there was no action. The "fix" for this was to just press backwards on the switch that operates the convertible type for about a half second, and then when I pressed forward again the closing-cycle completed (i.e., the last part flipped down and all was good). I've checked the hydraulic fluid level for the convertible top (per some excellent guidance in other posts), and it is fine. I've also checked that my battery is operating according to parameters with sufficient voltage and it is. Right now the top operates just fine -- this problem has only come up twice ever. Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on or how to avoid it? Much appreciated! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have the same problem occasionally. Make sure you only operate the top on engine power (not battery only). Also make sure none of the rams are leaking. If all of those are ok (as with mine) I am told that there are about 4 elastic straps that have become weak with time. These straps need to be replaced or beefed up (purchase at a Fabric Store and stitch on to of the one in place). Others have done it. I bought the straps but unable to find these straps to repair them.
There's another thread about this exact condition. It's more than likely the elastic straps that are causing this. Check your top right above the middle of the side window on both sides and see if you are getting 2 little puncture holes in the top about 6 inches apart and about 2 inches from the side. Some did fixed this themselves, others just flick the center support of the top over, and others like me paid about $400 to fix.
Mine does the exact same thing on rare occasion. I don't think it's the straps, otherwise it would be more consistent and the straps just assure that the top folds properly. I recall someone mentioning that it can be heat related (long drives, excessively hot days) and suggesting to let the car cool down for a few hours before closing the top. In my case when it happens, I open the top fully and then close it again.
Mine happens occasionally on the first try before driving off, i.e. cold not hot. This summer I am going to try and rebuild those straps Spikes360 wrote about. I've already flushed my fluids and don't see (none visible) any leaks.
