Has anyone ever put Hamann wheels on a car with HGTC brakes? HGTC brakes are massive (398mm vs standard 330mm or upgrade Brembo 355mm or 380mm), and I wonder if they will even clear the inner barrel. Given the 19in Modulars needed to be redesigned to accommodate HGTC brakes with a larger barrel inner diameter, I wonder if the same issue exists with Hamann wheels. The fact that Hamann/OZ wheels use a rather small wheel center (17.6in diameter vs 18.67in of the BBS-contract 19in modular wheels), it makes me very suspect. But that said, it is all fundamentally extrapolation unless someone has a actually tried it (or has a filament guide/knows the technical measures for HGTC brakes)
I have not, and its been years since I had one of those wheels in my hands. But I do not think they will fit. FYI, they are also very heavy if memory serves.
Common misconception. They weigh an average of about 26.x lb in 9in (front) and 28.x in 11-11.5in (rears)….about the same as OEM 17s on 456s and about 4-5lb lighter than OEM Modulars. The forged barrels are also stronger than the OEM/BBS 19s. They are not ultra-light modern forged wheels but not lead bricks either (think NF2). I have 3 sets but am considering a HGTC brake conversion
Interesting. It was 15-20 years ago, but I remember them being way heavier. Possibly I am thinking the 1 piece that we put on BMW's all the time (we were a Hamann dealer back then). Here is my wife's car back then: Image Unavailable, Please Login
BTW, here is what I put on our 550: Image Unavailable, Please Login Love to see a pic of the Hamann on yours.
BTW, what is the cost? Have you considered a Brembo upgrade instead? I do agree that an upgrade is a great idea on this car. I have never found the brakes to be awesome. Crap, my audi and bmw street cars stop better!
The longer version is the HM2 (what is on the Z3) and PG2 wheels are cast construction. Yes those wheels are HEAVY. Ferrari 5x108 spec were all contracted as “PG3” wheels….also technically 2 piece but they start life as forged halves (lip/barrel) that are then welded together before the face is added. Hence lighter and stronger than our OEM 19s (Butt about the same as the OEM 3 piece Speedline 550B Modular wheels)
Sure. These are the Hamann’s I’m likely going to sell if I can’t make work with HGTC brakes Image Unavailable, Please Login OEM brakes are “adequate” by late 90s standards, and horrible by modern standards, even with the FHP pads properly bedded (ask how I know). They are fine for casual driving, but not if you’re anything more and are using aggressive compound rubber (I run autocross 200 tread wear Bridgestone Re-71r tires). I do not track my fcars but I like the extra capacity for high speed drives /etc. I am currently using Brembo upgrade kit (you can kind of make it out in the photo). The braking is phenomenal and I never once had issues with fade even on longer drives. I opted for the 355 mm version so I could still use both OEM 18 and 19in wheels 575M (OE Bias 66.5F; Brembo 67F) Specs: (piston diameters) OEM (also Brembo) F: 330/32mm(38-46) R:310/28mm(30-34) Brembo OEM+ (Period Correct original contractor) F: 1M18028A 355/32mm thick; 28-34-36 R: 2C18010A 345/28mm thick; 28-30 PS the cost for retrofitting HGTC brakes is likely close to 20k with mostly new parts but with a lot of caveats as many of the parts are NLA…for now. I may or may not be working on an OEM solution but even then we’re talking about 16k minimum for parts alone if you can source them…
My Mov'It brakes are actually larger than the CCMs and they fit inside my old NF-2s, so likely will fit inside the PGIIIs, too. Only way to know is to fit check. Close, but they fit. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Like @Auraraptor, I'm running Hamann PG3 wheels. Agree that the stock 550 brake package is inadequate for anything more than moderately spirited driving. Reminds me of my 2013 Mustang Boss 302, whose stock Brembos weren't up to the task of serious track work. I ended up installing Brembo "Pro" series 4-piston racing calipers and two piece 380mm Brembo floating rotors up front on that car (along with 4" dia. brake cooling ducts and running Castrol SRF brake fluid) and that combination solved my braking problems. A similar brake upgrade on my 550 is the one mod I'd consider doing at this point.
I see, thanks. I have used those Brembos on many cars. We were a brembo dealer as well, and installed about 1000 sets on euros. lol. They look good and work, so are you contemplating the swap just to be more OE? Or is there another reason?
Just to compete an HGTC conversion…that’s it. I’m planning on adapting Brembo setup for the 456m too. Stay tuned 2024…
