Elton in red..... Whatever next, the pope on X Factor. He isn't good enough or clever enough to race for Ferrari

Ferrari want someone who appreciates Ferrari, not a driver who thinks Ferrari should worship him.

I'd pay Ferrari NOT to take the donut on stevie

Are you asking for real or are you just joking? It's an honest question, if you don't really know i can explain....

Spa 1982...Let´s hope that something like this will never be again the reason for the need of a new driver...Neither at Ferrari nore at another team.

I take it from your reaction that this is something I should know. :D

Seriously, I've no idea. I was born in 1983, so wasn't following F1 in 1982. I know the Scuderia was not in good shape by 1990s and it took the arrival of Schumacher, Todt, Brawn and Byrne to turn things around, but I don't know what happened specifically in 1982. Could you fill me in?

    All the best,
    Andrew.

    Ah, Gilles Villeneuve at Zolder.

Apologies, as I said, it was before I was born and I'm a bit more cued up on post-Millennium F1.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Those were terrible days.... One of the best things about f1 now is that safety is so much better, we lose very few ... RIP Jules of course, and to all the others that came before

Basicly what happened was that at Imola, the race before Zolder, most of the times missed the race (because there was a war going on between bernie(foca) and balestre (fisa), The british teams were almost all with Bernie and the constructors like Ferrari and Renault with Balestre.....so, after a couple of disqualifications in the previous races, The Foca teams boicoted the Imola race.....Ferrari and Renault had teh fastest cars so the race was going to be between them.....Arnoux made pole (as usual) folowed by Prost, Gilles and Pironi...Pironi some 1,5 sec slower then Gilles (as usual).....Fuel was an issue, It was decided at Ferrari that if both cars were in the laed they should slow down to save fuel if they had a good advantage over the third classified.....race started and Arnoux take sthe lead, Both Ferraris take prost (and he soon stops with flames coming out of the back of his renault)....batle goes on between the other 3..mainly between Gilles and Arnoux, overtaking themselves several times (fabulous race to watch)....then Gilles take sthe lead, Arnoux engine kaput and goes out in flames......both Ferraris safely in the lead....and it goes on...Alboreto is 40sec behind, so they see a panel from the pit with theyr positions and diference to Michele.....Gilles slows down by 2s a lap, Pironi catchs up and overtakes him...this goes on several laps...whenever Gille sretakes the lead he imediatly slows down, near the end, Gilles (who believed Didier wanted to put on a show for the italian crowd) Overtakes Pironi and shortly after the finish line reduces speed (expecting Didier to foloe him), Pironi takes his sleepstream and overtakes him, Gilles tries to retake position at the next turn but is rudly choped by pironi, only then does he ralise there is a real race going on!!! But it's to late, it's the last lap he he does not have another chance to overtake......after the race Gilles had to be convinced by his wife take thr podium....things got worse because Pironi knowing very well what he had done imidiatly speaks to teh press saying that he hoped Gilles was not angry, that they were racing, that there were no team orders....and Piccinini (who unfortunatly was replacing Mauro forghieri at that race) got along with him, saying that there were no orders, and that Gilles had an engine problem.....Gilles went crazy with all this Bs, and vowed never again to speak to Pironi.
Next week, there was a meeting at maranello, mauro was on gilles sides, saying that The pit shuold have put a sign ordering Pironi to stay behind Gilles, Sheckter was there with Gilles too, and ENzo said Gilles was right, but Pironi was not to much criticized, and this was the worst for Gilles.....the rest you already know...

What you are saying is that Hamilton wants to play Pironi now, and steal victories from his team mate.

I knew he was working up a scenario ...

You do realize its Keke Rosberg who said Lewis has Gilles bravery.

"And they are alike in their bravery. It was a similarity noted (ironically enough) by Keke Rosberg in advance of Lewis’s F1 debut in 2007, as he promised the uninitiated that: “He’s unbelievably brave – I mean, Gilles-brave”.

"Just like Gilles, Lewis is a freehand artist. Is possessed with an instinctive and astonishing driving talent, and his pure speed is considered without equal compared with his contemporaries. Sometimes what he does with a racing car can seem from another world. Certainly they share capacity for on-track showmanship: spectacular; lightening reflexes; the tail often in a slide. Either are firm in their capacity as their era’s most intense F1 racer and best overtaker. Pretty much always it seems when behind the wheel they are on the attack."

    Cant argue with facts mate.

Maybe Keke was being polite, and he meant "young and reckless"

He's much more polished and measured on the track....he bumps into a lot less people these days....but I guess it's easier at the front.

That's exactly it, soon as he drops into the pack his bumper cars come straight back. Keke might have been talking about potential, much like we all discuss max verstappen now, but the reality has not lived up to the hype and I very much doubt keke would feel Elton has lived up to things. His last two titles were a walkover due to the car, and the first, he didn't exactly cover himself in glory and he fell across the line to win

Hamilton is only 1/10th the driver Gilles was IMO - He lacks the wild control that Gilles had and is simply not as daring or crazy as Gilles was.

Mad Max on the other hand - Now that's a different story!

There are definitely some Gilles traits there with the way he races, and outside of the car he doesn't seem so desperate for the lime light in the way that Hamilton is - Gilles never needed the lime light off track either!
