Not sure if that part is true. Nelson Piquet is extremely wealthy himself (i.e. Brazilian cellular network et al).
I think we need to wait to get more clarification from actual Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Nelson stirred the pot plenty in his life, but would he really use the N word (as an offense) in an interview with Motorsport (one of the biggest if not THE biggest motorsport news platforms)? From what Furoni and other Brazilian Portuguese speakers have said so far, I'm leaning more towards the Brazilian N word being a lot less harmful than it is in the rest of the world. Not that it matters of course. Damage is done and people already believe whatever they want to believe. Funny that it was released in the British GP week though. ------ F A G in British English means cigarette. The same word in American english is an offense word for homosexual.
Of course it was. Nothing like a little controversy to raise the intrigue when the WDC race is starting to look like a foregone conclusion. Nelson is who he is…sticking his foot in his mouth is nothing new. I just see no reason to defend or justify it, reading that sentence, it’s clear what he meant. He could have just said ‘Lewis put his car there to hit him on purpose’. Saying “The_______…..” reveals his contempt.
Someone forwarded me this: So according to this Brazilian it was disrespectful but not taken as a racist word.
Again, it's not racist at all, Brazilians are very informal, they a huge mix of races, so being black, white, or mulato, is indiferent. For example, the term "negão". (big black man) is very used and in no way is it considered racist or defamatory, quite de oposite. "Neguinho" ( litle black man) is mostly used in a warming way, never racist. Nelson used it like he was calling him a kid (sneaky kid) nothing else, all this fuss is just ridiculous. Remember when Nelson was asking Elton about Nicole, in the podium? That's hou racist he is.
Pedro As you already know, truth and moderation are not the main virtues of this social network society. Unfortunately, I notice that the moderators of this site seems to consider as acceptable some discussions from the moment they are going in the direction of the dominant ideology. I can’t just imagine the next Gp atmosphere for Max and Red Bull. They will be accused of being racist by all the medias if they don’t publish something like Mercedes or Ferrari.( shame on them both !) Hamilton is the perfect prosecutor leading an army of little fascists in disguise. Really really happy when he will retire believe me.
I hope a lot of controversies and hostlities will die down with his departure. Once again the social media are in the dock for stirring up things, IMO.
That depends of where in Brazil you are, fluent in Brazilian Portuguese here, neguinho, negao can be used as a racist term as well. Try going to any social setting in Brazil and call someone a neguinho, negao. Big fan of Piquet but the guy needs to put his foot in his mouth sometimes.
Nelsão in known to be a big mouth, always has and always will, he doesn't give rats ass about being PC.
Also people in Brazil are not so indifferent when it comes to races, it's not uncommon to see a light brown person being racist to someone just because the skin of the other person is a tad darker. Then again it depends of where in Brazil you are, some terms are racist in one region and an endearment in others and so on.
Like furoni said, "neguinho" (in Brazil) and "negrito" (Spanish-speaking LatAm countries) are used as endearing terms between people of all races. "Nego" can be used as "this guy" when mentioning an unknown person, as in, "this guy is dumb" -> "nego é parvo". The way Nelson used the term in the video might be awkward (as he mentioned every pilot by their names and singled out Lewis as "neguinho") but initially it seems he was struggling to remember his name (he's saying the equivalent of "the... the... the..."), so "neguinho" ended up being the first thing it came to his mind. A little malicious perhaps but not in a full-blown racist way.
Nelson being a pig as usual. Very nice to see it fully out in the F1 headlines and not just sloughed off like usual. I see the apologists are out in full in other forums, attempting to blame this on Lewis If anyone needs a bit more insight on "lovably cheeky, blah blah" Piquet, look up the story of Carlos Reutemann and the Osella mechanic at Zolder (1981?)
I don't see what Piquet had to do with the death of that mechanic at Zolder. I must miss something ...
Back when people though I was "growing up"* 1960-ish the term n e g r o was proper (as was b l a c k) and the word n i g g e r was the derogatory term. One cannot use the term african-american if the person is a citizen of Africa ? So what term is proper for a dark skinned individual from Rhodesia ? Back then I was known as caucasian instead of white. Oh, and BTW, I hate PC as much as anyone on the planet. (*) to the extend I bothered........
Piquet staying stupid things as usual and over sensitive media blowing the whole situation out of control as usual , nothing new .
Stupid and sometimes very funny. Like Mansell the fast-idiot. Very refreshing with all the little uneducated prosecutors coming from social networks.
Negro is black in Spanish; the N word refers to a black slave. That's the difference. Why "African American" for someone who never set foot in Africa? Not possible to say Black American ? Black British is accepted here. A"dark skinned Rhodesian" would surely be called an African. Europeans in Africa are called White Africans. White instead of Caucasian started to be used when someone pointed out that Arabs are Caucasians too! I hope none of this is offensive to anyone.
It's zimbabwe now! Cancel Mitch! Having lived in that area of Africa (actually, this goes for all parts of Africa I've lived/visited), blacks call each other black, or the aforementioned spaced out N word, and that can be either totally fine or a horrible insult, completely dependent on context. Mixed race is southern africa is called a coloured. Perfectly fine there, they refer to it themselves, the blacks, the whites. Say that in America and you're in big trouble. In central Africa, blacks call whites a variation of Muzungu. Again, it's utterly dependent on the context if it's completely fine or a racial slur (Muzungu means "white ****", the foam that floats on top of the sea in the breakers and in some rivers). Funny story, buddy from mine in Botswana visited the states and was filling in the immigration form. Instead of ticking "African American" he used "other". His logic being that he was African, nott African American. Didn't go over so well with the always entertaining folks at immigration. He was allowed to stay in the end but spend a lot longer at the airport than he really wanted.
Does this 'context' involve which syllables get which accents ? or how long the syllable is enunciated ?
He didn't have anything to do with his death. There was a lot of unhappiness and unease from the drivers and mechanics about the state of the track and particularly the narrow and dangerously overcrowded pitlane. The worry was warranted - in qualifying, a 21 year old Italian Osella mechanic stumbled in pit lane and was run over by Carlos Reutemann's Williams and was killed. Carlos was obviously rattled and deeply upset, as most 'normal' human beings would be. Incidentally this was also the same weekend that another mechanic was badly injured on the race grid (in full view of the TV cameras) when he was attempting to assist the stalled Arrows of Patrese, and was then hit by the other Arrows of Sigfriend Stohr (in a situation confused and worsened by Bernie Ecclestone antics from the pit wall) Anyway, Piquet and Reutemann were title rivals that year and apparently Piquet (along with ex-McLaren, now Brabham man Allastair Caldwell) from that point on thought it hilarious - every time he walked by Carlos's Williams in the pit and paddock - to feign falling in front of the car, and then flash a big grin and laugh "Don't run me over Carlos!" etc. Imagine using a young dead mechanic to try to tweak your rival... A lovely story, eh?
