The way to accomplish that was to not throw a safety car, but merely a yellow and just let the guys race.

You know, the way they did it from 1920s through 2014.

That was exactly what we were waiting for - new statistics to prove for the haters that Lewis really is the GOAT.

What about this one: most races won while wearing illegal piercings / personal jewelry???

Remember: there are lies, and then there are statistics...

And please note, the longer Lewis keeps racing with the current car the lower his points per finished race ratio will become (just like Schumachers ratio dropped further and further in his years after his return to F1). If Hamilton doesn't quit soon, Fangio will be the GOAT again according to this statistics.

And after that there is marketing !!

Marketing is what has been going on in this thread for the last 50 pages.

Sing after me to the tune of "Dina won't you blow"::

"My man's better than your man,
    My man's better than your's
    My man's............."

    ad infinitum.

    You seem unhappy!

If you didn't like the stats that's too bad! Real world is hard to accept for Hamilton/Mercedes haters. :D

I am confused by the chart, are we to believe that Lauda, Mansell and Villeneuve do not make the list but Damon Hill, Bottas, Gonzalez and Von Trips do? Wow, my mind is blown.

Not to mention the number of races/year. Does anybody think Jackie Stewart wouldn't have many more points/race if there had been more than 15 races in '73? Or reliabilty were equal to day's cars? (Insert your driver and year)

No. How do you feel about a driver matters more. None of this changed how I feel at all. Interesting numbers and analysis nothing more!!

Lazy people rely on data as the be all and end all. Of all sports, F1 is probably the one whose competitors are least easily quantified by raw statistics, especially when applied to subjective concepts like “the greatest.” This is because of the innumerable variables the sport has sustained across seven decades, not to mention the pre-war era, including venues, technical regulations, tire regulations, reliance on technology, safety improvements, length of seasons, the financial and technical strength of the teams, the relative quality of the other drivers, the impact of sponsorship, etc., etc., etc.

The way I look at this is (recognizing that it’s never going to be settled) if I owned a Formula 1 team, what two drivers would I want in the team? Naturally I’d want the two “greatest,” right? Well, the ones I’d consider for that imaginary team might not be anywhere near the top of that chart.

The statistics do not provide context, if one only relies on them they get an overly simplistic view. Vettel has more wins than any other driver other than Hamilton and Schumacher and 4 WDC, does that make him better than Clark, Stewart, Senna and Prost? not even close. It does mean that he was in a far superior car for 4 years with a weak teammate in an era when there were many races each year. These charts made me laugh, data can be manipulated in any way to tell the story one wants to support their position. We all have our favorites, but these charts and lists are pretty funny as well as the eternal debate on which driver is the greatest. Different eras, different circumstances, apples vs oranges. Forza Ferrari is always consistent for me!

Drivers are ranked every year; that's why we have a championship. That's enough for me.

    Never did I.
Am I wrong in assuming this concept comes from the States?
I say that because I did hear that expression first being used about some of their sportmen, and the notion may have reached F1.

It wouldn’t surprise me, and more specifically from the sports media. News and sports media types in the ‘States seem to have a weird fascination with talking about (that’s all they do) “the greatest of all time.” I think it has its basis in a perception of reflected glory….”I’m talking about the g.o.a.t. so that confers upon me a piece of that status, and simultaneously my position as an “expert” gives me the power to award or withhold that status as I see fit.” And of course these same people have reams of statistics which they believe validate their opinions.

Giancarlo Baghetti won his first 3 F1 races: the non championship events in Siracusa and Naples, and the 47° Grand Prix de l'A.C.F.

Had he stopped after that, he would be been the eternal GOAT with a 100% score, never to be bettered again....
