A couple of nights ago, my son called me to watch a clip on TMZ. They had a clip of Lewis Hammy in LAX. The guy says, "We have Lewis Hamilton in LAX."

Two people ask, "Who is Lewis Hamilton." One guy says he is "some race car driver."

    Geez.

    Facepalm.

Here in the US it is very annoying and sad - Every time a NASCAR driver farts it makes Sportscenter and headline news and F1 gets (maybe) a small square in USAToday and never anything on any news station. Hopefully COTA and the USGP will change that a bit but it is flippin annoying.

Obviously, if there was a US driver competing (I mean competing - not what Scott Speed did) that would help things but it is what it is unfortunately.

No, in all seriousness, this is a good thing. It allows these guys to romp around on their time off without getting hassled. That's why Shumi vacationed in the States. He can have a good time and not worry about getting hounded.

Good point from a driver's privacy standpoint but I just get tired of explaining to people that Danica Patrick and Tony Kanaan don't drive F1 and when a race is on and they change the channel to flippin baseball I want to bang my head against something :) :)

Mika Hakkinen came to Atlanta and we went to a restaurant. A guy came up to him and asked him if he was "that actor on 'The Young and the Restless.'" He smiled and looked at me. I said, "Yes." He gave the guy an autograph, and the guy looked at it and looked confused.

After he leaves, Mika says to me, "Who is the Young Restless?"

His autograph looks like a couple of concentric circles underlined. Here it is. (Also underneath, it says "The Flying Finn" and "2" meaning 2 WDCs)

Exactly. In a world where nearly everyone wants a piece of you, the US can be an oasis.

I have run into both Nico Rosberg and Jarno Trulli in South Beach. Very few notice. them.

A friend ran into Schumi riding his Harley in Wyoming (??) couple years back.

    It'd never happen in europe.

I don't understand why some US enthusiasts want F1 to be popular in the States.

Look at what NASCAR has become in it's quest to be America's most popular motorsport. It's the automotive equivalent of Mexican Luche Dore Wrestling...

Look at the remains of American open wheel racing, which tore itself to pieces trying to get an audience on TV.

Look at ALMS, which despite being broadcast on what is supposedly a motorsports channel, can't get more viewers than a rerun of Pokemon.

I'm fine with the way things are now. If it becomes popular, the sponsors go nuts, the broadcasters go nuts and eventually the on-track racing suffers.

... and Bernie doesn't need any more help in that area.

I've noticed that since NBC started carrying the races there are F1 news blurbs all over the interwebs. The annoying tickers on many sports TV shows also show quali and race results. we're still al long way from Nico Rosberg getting mobbed at a US restaurant!

Micheal Schumacher loves to vacation in America. It's the only place on the planet where he can go freely without anyone bothering him.

I think he was saying that to get the questioner to leave him alone. It looked like he didn't want to engage.
