What is a better hand held radio? iCom or Vertex?
Better for what? Distance, clarity, price, weight, accessories, ease of use, Bells and whistles???? Ask specific questions to get good answers.
I'm lookjng for the best all around radio without taking the price or weight into decision. The most important may be ease of use and then important accessories, distance & clarity then bells and whistles. I don't want to buy a radio and then realize I should have spent a little more to have all the options you may need. Thanks for any advice you may have!
I've got the Icom A24. It's top of the line, with all the accesories, and extra batteries.. As for ease of use... It will take a while to get used to all the features, but the one I like best, is the "toggle frequencies" feature. It allows one to go to last ten used frequencies with one button push. ...a sort of website "back button". Like most handhelds, its output is 5 watts, so range is going to be similar. It also can be used for Navigation on VOR's, a nice backup if your Nav radio goes screwey.... see http://www.mypilotstore.com/mypilotstore/sep/2893 for all the goodies.. And no I didn't buy it for myself. I got it as an xmas gift, but I am very pleased with it.
OK, you're welcome. Anytime at all.... It is a very nice transceiver. I like the fact that I can also use it while battery is on charger... with the "Wall Wart" as I call the transformer. Can always get that last bit of juice in there at the FBO, before take off...
I use a sporties transciever. It's one of the low end but it has the nav functions and is easy to use. It works for me but I'm somewhat low tech. before that I had a Luscombe and used a KX99 as my only radio. It worked out real good. I just put fresh batteries in and went flying. It also had a nav function. In fact, it had more electricity that the rest of the airplane except for the mags. Bob Wassam
