Saturday between a Ferrari rally in the morning and our FCA Exotic Car Nights that evening we're going over to a gun showroom and range to test fire various handguns. I grew up hunting and just got my CHL, but otherwise don't know anything about the various handguns. From a duck hunting forum the recomendation was a subcompact like Glock 0.40 for range and some carry while a little Kel-tech for light carry.

Here is a list of everything I can test fire, what do you recomend I take a look at? First gun I want something that will mainly be for fun target shooting and some carry. Is a subcompact Glock or Sig not going to be as fun for all the target shooting?

    Out of my mind
the Glock is the most accurate pistol I have ever shot "out of the box". can't remember which models, but I have fired several different ones with awesome results.

I personally use a .44cal S&W 629 classic with a 61/2" barrel in stainless steel. very good for hunting, not good for concealment.

There fun to shoot, just not " Target " guns. Dont let that stop you if thats what you want to shoot. HKs, CZs nice as well. Dont forget the oldie but goodie Govt Colt 45 ACP.
Forget .50 Desert Eagle. Waste of metal. If you try, wear shooting glasses.

Avoid the Kel Tech crap...utter garbage.

Compact carry, I use a Glock 29 in 10. Or a S&W titanium in .38 when I need to go light and yet want something marginally more effective than a rock for self defense.

Plinkers...impossible to go wrong with a Ruger Mark 3, it's very, very accurate.

For revolvers, I prefer older stuff like my Colt Trooper (boat anchor) or S&W 686, both in .357. 357's are lots of fun, and cheap to shoot if you reload your own like I do.

    For reloading, I use this:

    http://dillonprecision.com/template/p.cfm?maj=12&dyn=1&cookieClean=1

And it paid for itself in no time flat!

Semi autos...it all boils down to what you shoot best. I had a hard time with the Glock at first (me, not the gun), but was driving tacks with a Sig the first clip. It's hard (impossible) to go wrong with a Kimber, Sig, H&K, Glock, or CZ. Try em, buy what you shoot best with.

Stuff to avoid in semi-auto: Kahr, Kel-tec, any Ruger or S&W above .22, Taurus. Desert Eagle, which should come with gold teeth and bling rims.

I have a KelTec P32. I have approximately 600 rounds through it, including some +P ammo. It has NEVER jammed, misfired, etc. Mine has been utterly reliable. Is it accurate past 5 feet? No. Does it have much stopping power? No. Is it comfortable to hold? No. BUT, if you concealed carry requirement places light weight above all other considerations, it is worth a look.

Glocks are reliable, comfortable and have holsters, parts, etc. available everywhere. I'd also vote for S&W revolvers--I love my Scandium/Titanium
.357, but it kicks like a mother.

    Rifles...

One of the best plinkers out is the Ruger 10/22. You can go absolutely bananas with a stock rifle, or go completely nuts building a custom version. I'd recommend putting on a cheapish scope, the stock sights are blah.

Ruger Mini-14 is lots of fun, accurate, can buy lots of goodies to put on it. I haven't tried the Mini-30, but the ammo is dirt cheap, what, 10 thousand rounds for a dollar? :D

    SKS...lots of fun...for me. I have a rareish version with factory AK-47 mags, lots of fun with a stack of 30-round mags :D :D :D :D.

Varminters...soon as I move to a place with actual varmints, I will get a couple CZ's...take a look at them, they are wonderful rifles!

Heck yeah the thing kicks! That's why I got the .38, which is a complete pea-shooter in comparison. But, damn, both are highly accurate for being snubbies.

I second the H&K USP, I love that gun.

I've never liked the Glocks, I know people rave about them but for me the shell ejection has been an issue.

One of my roommates in college (also a Marine) had enough guns to supply a small army, and he had a Beretta 9mm as his target gun, and a Sig 45 as the gun he carried for protection. When not being used for shooting or protection, they were stored (locked and loaded) under his bed along with a pistol grip shotgun. In the closet, he had around 20 rifles. He was my neighbor growing up, and his whole family (dad and 2 brothers) were BIG hunters. Hearing him talk, the Sig was one of the best guns he'd ever shot.

Springfield XD 9mm or .45 ACP

I have a 9mm and ordered a .45 both in 5' I do IPSC shooting and both XD and Glock are popular models. The choice is up tp you and what you want. If its CCW, check one of the two but when you buy a gun, it has to feel like an extension of your hand not something bulky your trying to hold. To me I didn't like the fit of the Glock but the XD fit my hand like a glove.

World champion uses Springfield guns !

I have shot and owned most of the popular handgun brands, but over the years ended up only keeping the custom 1911(s), HK products, and German made Sig Sauer products

If you like the smaller .380 round and want to be the man like James Bond ( ;) ) try out the Walther PPK/s. I have one and it's wonderful, feels great in the hand, very solid and a great all-around compact pistol. It is my first handgun though, but I love it.

Also if you can try out the Bersa Thunder too, it's a PPK clone that many actually prefer to the actual Walther. A lot of people carry them and swear by them and I haven't heard anyone doubt their reliability yet. They're very inexpensive too, for not much more than $200 you can have yourself abrand-spanking new Bersa .380.

    Good luck and be safe!

    Rob,

I have a Sig 229 with both the .40 and the .357 barrels. It's like two different guns. Lots of fun to plink with.
