February 8-10th Jennie and I are flying down to Fredericksburg to stay at the Hangar Hotel. Russ, if you are flying the T-28 maybe you can stop over?

We’ll fly in Friday morning, have one of the FBO’s rental cars, and besides enjoying local stuff we might make some short flights in the area Friday and Saturday.

I am pretty sure the T-28 will still be down for service, but would love for you to come 15 minutes south of Fredricksburg to Boerne Stage and get the tour of the plane.
I'm getting seven new jugs put on her. Wouldn't that thought make your boy Lamour go into a tizzy. :)

I'm sure big jugs at that!?!

We'll plan something, plans were some short flights Friday afternoon and Saturday, so let me know a good time. Saturday morning might be the best.

The big weekend has arrived. Woke up at 6:30am thinking that would be plenty of time to be at plane by 8am and take off 9am at latest. Well, a wife and 14 mo takes longer than 90 minutes to get up, packed, weather briefing, breakfast, and drive to airport. We arrived about 8:40 to airport.

Took time to eat breakfast, pack plane, do all the paper work. For first time ever maybe the rental plane had enough gas! Still, we didn't take off until 9:45. I was so prepared, did a written flight plan although I knew GPS would be my primary. Had a flight plan filed. Took off, opened flight plan, called Alliance for transition clearance. Got it and then asked if they could put me on flight following, they said they would once they got us through. We went through Alliance and then they had us call 118.1 as I had expected, 118.1 had us call Meacham, Meacham had us call back 118.1, 118.1 told us to go away they were too busy. I was SO frustrated at this point, I know they are busy, but why is my plane without any type of traffic system (well, do have the G1000) their lowest priority and why so rude to just a "Skyhawk". Anyway, by around Parker 118.1 was quiet awhile and I got on to get the flight following, everyone very friendly and helpful once we got off 118.1. Guess that guy was just too good for a "Skyhawk".

Beautiful day! Absolutely clear, although reports of turbulence, we didn't experience any. Did have a little cross and head wind slowing our ground speed 10 kts. Tried 8,500 but went back to 6,500 as high was 55 kts. and 2k feet less only 30 kts.

2:05 flight from roll off to taxi. Great flight, had a 10-15 kt. wind 90 degrees off runway 14 at Frederksburg. I set Jennie's expectations low that I would take a look, but would probalby go around because of the cross wind, but I was able to pull off the cross wind landing first time, it was actually pretty good.

We filled plane up with gas, checked in to hotel, and got rental from FBO. Unloaded the plane, loaded the room and went to downtown for lunch eating at Winslow's.

So post lunch decision time. We could hang out downtown, but Jennie and Mia wanted to rest a little and this afternoon would be my only opportunity to go see Russ's T-28 at Boerne. So that turned out to be the plan, they stayed behind and at 3pm I was off south 30 nm to Boerne. Still a cross-wind going on and of course although I nailed the Frederksburg landing, when Russ and another FerrariChat.com user I didn't expect were watching I balked the landing and had my first go around in about 3 months. Oh well, it gave them something to tease me about. At least Russ the experienced pilot was giving me a hard time for getting in the power trying to make the touchdown soft, he said to just pull the dang power and slam it! I got to sit in the T-28! What a plane, it is HUGE! When inside it feels great, plenty of room and just wraps you like a glove. Can't wait to get a ride.

Such a beautiful day and I had been flying over 3 hours total, but I still did 5 touch and go's with one low fly-by. Jennie and Mia were out on the patio watching. Of course all my landings were great because Russ wasn't watching! :)

Just happened to be 5pm and the Officer's Club was open. Hung out there until our 7:30 reservation at Cotton Gin talking to pilots, watching planes come in, and watching all the National Forest Service Fire Fighters based at Gillespie right now. Cotton Gin was really good, more than I expected. Back for night cap at Officer's Club and back in room now, will sleep in and spend more time downtown tomorrow.

They were all great landings - even before you went around! :)

    Always great to see Rob.

AviatorChat should all meet at Fredricksburg sometime!

In one sense I’m surprised there aren’t more people here. What a great place and there are still rooms available. Not crowded at all, but I wish a little more so. I'm not all that social, but everyone very comfortable here with strangers because we all share flying in common. Jennie and I talked to the Cirrus owners from Dallas awhile in Officer's club. In the other sense I'm overwhelmed with the ramp and diversity of planes. These pics were from first thing this morning. Some big planes spent the night, like the Citation, King Air, and the other twin (what is this?). The GA planes seemed to have one of everything... Skyhawks (2), Skylanes (2-3), Mooney, Bonanza, Cirrus, Diamond, and Columbia. The National Forest Service has two huge helicopters based here, was actually a big fire SW of here, but they had it under control by dark. I heard based here through April. Anyone know story of the big plane? Is that a fire fighting plane or just parked here, a DC-3?

Yesterday we made it downtown and my mission was a German lunch and beer! Mission accomplished at Der Lindenbaum with a Sausage Plate. Afterwards strolled both sides of street. Quick nap at hotel and then back to downtown for supper at Bejas Grill.

For breakfast the Airport Diner is as fun in the morning as the Officer's Club is at night. Mostly pilots both places, so of course great people! :)

Clouds on the deck all morning, eating breakfast about 10am signs of holes and sun coming down. Decided to load up and give it a try. Started prop about 11:10 and still a ceiling about 1500 AGL, but a few holes. Took off and instead of hugging deck I was able to snake around and get through the holes to get up top. At 7500' it was smooth and beautiful! Although my excitement for the 15 kt. tailwinds at the surface turned into 5 kt. headwind at 7500'. Still made much better time than coming down with the 30 kt. x/head-winds. About 40 nm from SEP opened up below, nice gentle descent into Clark for Mia. Stopped in for lunch at Hard 8 with some others from the DFW Pilots group.

Much bumpier getting to Northwest at 3500', but clear. 5500' and we would have had to snake around the clouds.

So a great trip! We had a great time on our first destination flight as a family. Gave us complete confidence we can go even further. Already getting a little speed greedy though, kept thinking how much faster if in a Skylane. :p

    ...or a 210 even faster. :)

If I had not gotten my humble two seat trainer and opted for a go somewhere plane - well, I think a Commander 112/114 is really comfortable.

Great trip and great to see you! Fredricksburg is always a solid family venue for everyone.

Sounds like a great trip Rob.

You've convinced me to stop at Hangar Hotel on my trip out west.

You've got the cutest little girl.

I also used to have trouble with ATC and getting "blown off". One day, when I was getting checked out in the Cirrus. I had a great CFI flying with me who was militant about "radio lingo" with ATC. He trained me to get the "with you's" and "here's" etc. out of my vocabulary when speaking with ATC.

This has made all the difference in the world. I fly a Cirrus but sound like one of the big boys on the radio and I get treated like one.

Rob- I started with Cessna; except for a brief affair with a Grumnamurican low wing doesn't work for me. If you like the 172, you will be in love with your 182. Higher wing loading, more power, and an honest 4 seater. Once you get used to the Prop, cowl flaps and the new rating, you will wonder why people fly 172. Pure speed wasn't that much of a draw for me, but if you want more, 182RG makes the most sense to me. The 210 never appealed to me except on the Ramp, the cantilever wing is beautiful, but the maintenance and insurance, added to its complexity, kept it at arms length. The 210 is a lovely siren; adding Ox, Turbo, and or pressurization, you've got a big bank account, alot of home equity, and/or a danger driven soul. Single engine IFR isn't comfortable for me. Go fly the 182, and see what everybody's talking about.

BTW Jason's right about the Radios. Regardless of type and tail number, if you talk like a pro, you'll generally get treated like one. Get it down in your head before you key, time is precious. Sound confused, you'll get spanked.

He didn't even give me enough time to prove how bad I am. :) All I said was "Regional Approach - Skyhawk 11524". He blew me off at that point, not after the chance to fumble location, destination, and request.

Rob- I cycle freqs ahead of my need to use them and monitor as much as my workload permits. Getting an audio "picture" of what's up and the controller's workload can be a clue; if he sounds stressed, be crisp and concise, maybe echo some concern in your com. Sound like you have his picture, and you'll get it in his response. If he's busy and you're doing your Yeager imitation, he'll probably not play along. This isn't picky or manipulative. Remember the round wheel at the playground? Don't just jump on, run alongside until your speed matches it, then step aboard.

Then again, some groundies just have a bad day, too.
Also, you are a Pilot, and when necessary, "Unable, STANDBY"
Or, "Unfamiliar"; that obligates him to slow down and help, or look like the true jerk that he is.

I love the time a controller was working Bay Approach, with at least a dozen of a bizarre mix, machine-gunning everybody into line like Bernstein at the Philharmonic, and at the first pause in the action he got a half dozen right back, in order, in line from the pilots, Nice Job, Good Work, well done, etc.
What does he do? Burped into the Mike. You had to be there.

I absolutely talk to people as very little as possible. I would rather fly the plane.
And when I do, I play a game: "the very fewest words does it take to accurately say what I want".
    Be ultra concise
    Be predictable
    Fly the plane

4 hours x $117 for the trip. I flew down to see Russ one afternoon and when i got back shot touch & goes, that was maybe 1.5 hours.

I flew down for lunch with instructor to get some Skylane time, that trip was about $850!
