Had a mechanical failure ( I think) on one of my SATA drives. I think the bearings went in it, there was a terrible screeching sound coming from the tower, so I shut it down. I have a huge Thermaltake server tower, with lots of room to work in. To get to my question: Is there a USB docking station I can get to hook up this internal SATA 3.0 drive to, to try to recover the data? I want to do this more to learn from, than for emergency. I *think* my pics and music were backed up. Newegg does not really explain the specs in a way a newb can understand. Thanks.
Sure there are plenty of things (see link below) that will allow you to mount/read a hard-drive externally over a USB connection. I haven't used the one below, but it is ~$30. There will/should be others out there. http://www.meritline.com/ineo-technology-25-35-sata-usb-30-super-speed-hard-drive-docking-station-white-model-i-na---p-53951.aspx?source=fghdac
Thank you, I will take a look at this. i run XP 64 and Linux, so hopefully one of them will be supported. may be time to upgrade to Windows 7. My C and H drives are fine, but are about the same age, so its time to get a new main drive ready.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153071&cm_re=hard_drive_docking_station-_-17-153-071-_-Product Drives are so cheap now, there's no reason to lose data. A stack of WD greens or blues for storage, and a Samsung F3 as OS drive and you are all set. I use this www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html to make and keep mirrored copies of all my data on all my hard drives across all my PC's, so any single drive of mine has a copy of everything I need.
Thank you, I did need to find some software of this sort. Sounds like it will work perfectly. The new drive is 500 gig, and will be here soon. I ordered sata/ide cables to connect an internal hard drive to the usb port. I think the drive is toast, but I want to give it a shot, and try to learn something new. Strange to have such a sudden mechanical failure.
