The blue filter is for a car with a V-6 3 liter engine putting out 244 horsepower.

The red filter is for a V6 2.4 liter engine that puts out 180 horsepower.

Pretty surprising difference. The red filter is the size and shape of an old fashioned oil can.

I've always felt more secure with the largest filter possible. I don't go cross-referencing all of my motors, but on my racing motor I have found a 1.5 quart filter that fits in the spot of the OEM filter 1/3 of its size.

A lot of modern engines run really tight tolerances and seem to use smaller filters.. especially on econo japanese engines.

We will continue to see oil filters getting smaller. It is a disposal issue driven by the EPA.
