Hey Everyone, My new 308 qv has a great 2nd gear syncro and all the others are good too, but!!! I can barely ( if at all ) shift into first from a stop. Is this normal? Am I stupid? Can it be fixed? Is there a TRICK? Thanks, Brian

Is reverse also difficult to engage? If so, may be a problem with clutch not fully disengaging.

I am sure the guys that really know what they are talking about know of several possibilities, but I had a similar problem and it was the rear bushing on the shift linkage (so, there's one of ???) good luck!

Same issue, sometimes, on my '83 Mondial QV:
    - unrelated to hot/cold engine/gearbox
    - bushings redone > no change
    - reverse ususally has the same issue when 1st has it
I usually release the clutch briefly in neutral, then re-engage 1st.
Doesn't solve the problem, but gets you off the crossing...

Put the gear into neutral, release clutch, blip the throttle, and then shift into 1st. That usually does it for me.

When you try to shift into first at a stop, does it "grind" when you try to engage 1st, or does it just stonewall and refuse to slide into first gear ?

I have similar problems with my 78 GTS. Down shifting to 3rd and 2nd before stopping seems to help. It just won’t go into 1st sometimes, not grinding, just won’t go. If I go into 2nd, then 3rd, then back to 1st in goes in. Been that way for the 26 years I have been driving it. Randy

My '78 did that when I first got it. After doing the engine out belt service, we took the time to carefully adjust the shift linkage, and that solved the problem. Still a little stiff getting into second when the tranny is really cold, but otherwise, she shifts perfectly.

My Alfa 105 has no synchro in first. So from the first time I drove it the mechanic showed me what to do. When you come to a stop, shift into second and then into first. It just becomes second nature and you never think of it.
Of course you should be able to get into first no problem, but for the moment, try the "second then first" trick and see if that works for you.

It's getting worse or I am just more sensitive about it. All the "tricks" aren't really helping. I drive a 1967 Land Rover with no 2nd gear synchro and have been driving big trucks without using the clutch (thats how you do it) for years so I'm thinking I could live with a system but something is wrong. I guess I should begin with the shift linkage bearings and a shift linkage adjustment? Does anyone know what this entails? $? time? skill level? Thanks , Brian

Show me a stick shifter that doesn't have this from time to time!

I've gone through several VW's, BWM's, Peugeot, Honda, Volvo's. All stick shift. And of them had this from time to time. Shift to second, let it roll for half an inch and in slides the first with no effort at all.

Nothing to worry about, I'd say...

I'm not sure what gear oil you are using but I had this exact problem in my GT4...I replaced the oil with Redline 75W90ns and it cured the problem

My 85 308 wouldn't go into 2nd when cold with out grinding off a chunk of the gear and in general was difficult to shift hot or cold. I changed the oil to the RedLine 75W90ns and all my shifting problems went away.

I ordered it from Summit I think.

AArghhh!! OK, So I haven't changed the tranny oil yet but I found some info about the pedals needing to be aligned. Aligned in what way? Height wise they are about 2" off, the clutch being the lower one. Is this the problem?

Now its definately your shift alignment. There are two ways of doing this, one involves removing the gearbox sump and the other doesnt.I aligned my GT4 without having to remove the sump although others on this board had to rmove it.It also helps to have a helper helping you athough again I did it alone but wished I had a helper. If you do a search there are various threads which show pics on how to do it
