I would like to Time Trial my 355. Does anyone know of a harness bar made for the car?

    Thanks.

    john,

So...after seeing the Ferrari at AROSC you got the itch eh????? Look what I did for my Z06 Vette which I occasionally track. You can make a harness bar from DOM tubing bolted to the B piller OEM seatbelt locations and use a plate as shown to attach the oem shoulder belts. I'm in torrance if you want to weld.

As fatbillybob said, you can have a custom one made up that attach at the stock seat belt mounting points. Or just go right through the firewall, which is what the Challenge boys do.

The aftermarket harness looks like it would be ok, but are you sure the stock shoulder belt would still be safe? It's attached in single shear, and will also impart a flexural load on the bolt.
Not sure if the same setup could be duplicated in a 355 though.

First I'll say that a harness bar is a total compromise and not what I like. What I like is pictured below. The single shear bolt is exactly as GM intended and uses. In fact it is the same bolt. Most if not all shoulder belt oem systems are in single shear. I assume GM designed this cantelvered single sheear bolt to do it job when needed.

I plan to roll my own harness bar for my 355 this year. I did one for my Lancia Scorpion using the stock shoulder belt mounting points. I made the side brakets from 6061 AL angle, the bar itslelf from 3/8" wall 6061 AL tube and it's bolted via 3/4" allen head caps screws at each end.

The one I do for the 355 will be simlar in construction.

    Very clean Jeff,

Can we see the whole car? Also, do clubs get their undies in a bunch with aluminium harness bar? Clubs around here don't even like ERW!

The alloy is Aircraft grade 6061 and about 4 times the thickness of steel. Haerware is the appropriate SAE grade. I think I'll have more problems if I get into anycondition where I bend or break the assembly. It suffices for track days and is way overkill for the street.

HEre's the rest of the car

VERY fun to drive! I turboed it and have 190 rear wheel horsepower and 180 ft lbs (stock had 81 hp at the crank and 86 ft lb torque). Beefed up the chassis and brakes as well. Car only weighs 2400 lbs.

Apologies to the Ferrari guys, but I thought the car needed some graphics and I like the Stradale stripes cuz the screemed "Italy". I didn't think they'd be seen as a "wannabee". I just like the look and mad the Scorp look a bit more agressive. Same with the c.f wing.. which does keep the car hands free stable at 125 MPH. :)

Got all the parts together for the Stratos and the tub and body are assembled.
Put it temporary storage while an "Impulse" restoration is finished..'65 Mustang Fastback grabbed my nuts last year. Should be finishing up in June, then back to the Stratos
