I'll read, but damn, those line breaks are annoying!

Okay, off to read, drink beer and work on backups.

Truly an amazing and remarkable story! The sad part is that the major threat to the residents was not from the storm, not from the flood, but from the looters.

    Yes, very sad.

Which also makes me VERY irritated that the government is taking away the weapons of peaceful citezens who remain in the city. I can understand taking away an illegal AK47 being carried by someone who is obviously posing a threat. But to disarm people trying to protect their property is a SERIOUS issue in my book.

I understand that 99% of the criminal element has been removed from the city, but what about that 1% who have alluded the National Guard and want to steal from the good citezens who remain????

A hell of a story! Now they're saying the authorities are going to go around and start shooting pets.

Been happening for quite some time now. Problem is that these pets have no food and have been drinking highly contaminated water for days, which means their insides are being eaten up. Shooting them is probably much more humane than having a slow, painful death.

Yes, that's a VERY alarming fact...

That was an incredible story, John, thanks for sharing it... Some people really know how to hold it together in dire times...

I just couldn't believe what I was reading as I was reading it. The commando style 'noise lines' was where I knew these great people WERE NOT screwing around!

I still don't see the ability for anyone to remove a firearm from my hands. While I don't own one, if anyone did for "just cause" reasons, I'd be defending myself, even if I were in front of ten marines. Revolt? It is time for it. Don't you think? Thomas J.'s thoughts on a revolution to up the moarale of the people is long over due.

    People make me sick.

Oh and for those in Houston or I'm sure other areas/states who have taken in victims your local news is not telling you straight (big surprise I know). They seem to make you believe all is well. My friends dad works for the Sherrifs Office here in Houston and has been working down at the Astrodome. He says there is continuous vandalism of cars in the parking lot, fights, etc. My dad has also received emails (which obviously makes it questionable, but i believe it) about things such as this and that the volunteers are being harrassed and called racist terms....i.e. cracker. Not just at the Dome but at many of the help centers. That term obviously doesn't offend many white people, me especially i find it humorous. But it's the whole point of the matter.

I know these are a very small percentage doing these things I'm sure, but it is they who ruin it for everyone else. I just wanted to forewarn anyone who is going down to volunteer.

Best of luck to you John.

So far so good. 99% of the people I have encountered at the shelters have been very appreciative. But then again, when I am talking with various persons they learn that I too am evacuated from New Orleans. This part alone could easily garner a more receptive response from them than if I were more removed from the situation.

When helping out I mainly concentrate on individuals inside the shelter(meaning I don't sit around too much getting the feel from other volunteers). But I can tell that other volunteers have possibly encountered different situations, of which I will try to be more keen to.
