Hi all, I've been looking for information on the architectural works of Harry Gesner for a while now. So far all I've found are the following: An article from Malibu Magazine - http://www.malibumag.com/onlinemagazine/febmar06/harrygesner.htm (UK readers may recognize Lawrence House - it featured in a TV advert for Fosters Lager) A listing of properties/architects in Malibu - http://www.malibucomplete.com/mc_history_dev_1970s-91_architecture.php Does anyone know where I can find any more info - whether on line, in books(I've searched amazon to no avail), etc. I'm also interested in information on his 1959 electric Mercedes conversion if anyone has anything on that. TIA
I'm familiar with the works, and now with the man behind them...thanks for posting. I must have read Gesner's story at some time in the distant past, because the account of his refusal to lose his legs during WWII rings a bell. The Eagle's Nest is particularly impressive by today's standards...very undated and contemporary-looking. As far as anything published about him, I haven't seen it...except maybe in architectural journals of the 70's, like Architectural Record. Unfortunately, there's not much in the way of hardbound books about individual outstanding architects with local reputations.
Thanks for the reply Scott. I've not seen any of Gesner's works 'for real' yet - my last trip to the USA was before I got into architecture. Hopefully I'll be visiting a friend in Venice, CA later this year and she's a bit of an art/architecture junkie as well, so we'll maybe take a trip down Malibu way (and into the Hollywood hills) and take a peek at some of the notable houses around there (Gesner, Lautner, etc). Shame there's nothing published about Gesner. When I get a chance, I'll go to the library and see if they have any old architecture journals or if I can find some books on architecture in Malibu - I think that'll be the best bet !
