Has anybody discovered a neat trick for removing the chrome ring from around the smaller instruments such as gas, water temp. etc. without destroying them? The speedo and tach are easy enough to disassemble, but the chrome rings on the other instruments are put on really really tight -- I'm afraid that I might break something.

No easy trick, instrument shops have tools that smoothly open the ring up, then roll it back down again.

Best to look for a speedometer/instrument repair shop in your area. Or search Fchat for 'speedometer' & 'repair'.

I didn't have a neat trick when I opened my clock to fix it.
I used an exacto knife to gently lift the edges slightly on the back side of the chrome and then switched to a pocket knife (for rigidity) to nurse the edges up enough to coax the ring off. About 20 minutes because I was very careful.

Going back on I used the pocket knife again to push the edges back down after the chrome was back in place. no creases. Very good looking, any visible tampering is only visible from the rear of the clock.
