I bought a set of the converter eliminator pipes for my 348. But I really do not want to use them. I also bought a pair of used OEM 348 converters. I had one bad OEM converter and I found someone that had a pair where the opposite side converter was bad. So once done I still will have a good pair of factory converters. So I want to gut the bad converters. The problem I have is the baffles where the pipe enters the chamber for the converter. They have a section that is bent over with holes in it. If I can remove that I can side a piece of 409 stainless steel tube inside the hollowed out cat so there is no issues with having such a large chamber and having turbulence of the exhaust flow thru this hollowed out converter. I want to remove this obstruction without damaging the look of these used converters. I have used spider muffler and this will all match nicely. I have been looking at these all winter. :( Too deep to get a cut off wheel in there it seems. Anyone else remove this section in a factory converter?

Or should I just guy the honey comb out and not worry about this chamber.

I have 409 stainless steel tubing that fits perfectly into the ID of the factory converter pipe.

I did this to my 355, but only to the secondary cats which are only used at high rpm. I didn't sweat the turbulence, just kept the larger dia. cat section in place.

Just buy the Tubi or many other varieties of straight pipes...I put them in my old car and they work great...They have both the o2 sensor and thermocoupler sensor holes already pre-drilled into the pipe...Just bolt up, screw in the sensors and go! thermocoupler sensor is useless without cats but its nice to know that it is still there...

To get the stockers apart you will have to cut them in half on a chop saw! Seems like a lot of work for little gain sir....................Scott

The honeycomb is surrounded by a type of wire mesh. If you destroy the honeycomb in such a way as to do minimal damage to the mesh, the mesh will be easier to remove. You can remove it from the opening with needlenose, vicegrips, dynamite, whatever. If it becomes wadded into a ball, it's hard to get out of the opening. There's a baffle in the inlet which you may not be able to remove.

tip: don't grab and pull the internal mesh. Grab and shake the cat off your pliers and it comes out really fast like 5 minutes. You'll see...give it a try

I would never do such a thing. Poisoning our planet with more greenhouse gasses. Shame on you.

Who invented the converter anyway? It was a quick bandaid fix in 1975 when all USA cars where still carburated. I argue to this day that EFI with O2 feedback, there should be no Catalytic converters, EGR valves, various check valves and vacuum ported switches. Just a bunch of bureaucratic save the planet BS.

Rodney, since you want to install a tube through the cat, you should not have to remove the wire mesh, you can if you want. Take an air chisel and knocked out the metal deflector, then break out the honeycomb. Then you should be able to install your tube and tack in place. It will retain the factory look your after. It just won't sound factory anymore.

Man, this sounds like an awful lot of work. First, the factory cat is obsolete cat technology, heavy and restrictive. Second, there are so many upgrade options that this would be my choice. In fact, this is what goth and I are doing.

    Rodney ,

On my 348TB `90 the cat`s are both empty-ed...(by previous owner)
It is a bit louder, but I hear no distorsion or turbulance... And I should know: I used to be in the muffler bussiness.

    Regards, Ben

Looking at them again today for the umpteenth time I have an idea that may work. I'll use my sazall and cut a few cuts in the baffle area inside the converter. I should be able to get the baffle out and push the rest outwards allowing the inner sleeve I plan on using to get real close to the inlet pipe of the converter. This will allow straight thru exhaust flow and I will have an OEM looking system.

Just when I was getting excited about doing this we get 14 inches of snow. :(
