The sound is a bit higher pitch but it works very well!

 

A few people have them on here, and i am one of them. Fit it you will be amazed at how this small motor spins the engine over. superb piece of kit for the money and never mind originality, only Houdini would spot it wasnt OEM and he's dead!

unless your starter does not turn the engine over fast enough in the first place.

Typically you turn the key and then pump once in warm weather and two max three in winter.
if the car is warm you may not need to pump, if its very warm, you may need to floor the throttle and turn the key. Then if the sparks are in the right place at the right time it will fire up.

The starter should really spin that engine and not labor at it. How is the battery?

What are the other nine steps in you ritual...apart from the goat thing?

I feel like the car starts quicker (in less time) with this starter. Sounds like it requireds less current, leaving more for the "spark"...

I think I've recently seen a Dino with one of these gear reduction starters and it seemed like it whined when being started - kind of like a late 1970s to mid 1980s Chrysler starter, but not quite as bad. Is that what they sound like? Or, is it likely that there was a problem with the one that I saw/heard?

 

No such noise from mine just the engine turning for 2 seconds before she fires!

John Amette mentioned that he met you (British gentleman, does Classiche in U.S.). Do you have a Daytona?

DinoGTS - No such noise with mine. Sounds great and consistent with the F-sound.

I agree that these small, gear reduction starters are great. I have only put one into one Dino. It came from British starters and I think that it was around $400.

The only trouble I had was that the way the actual starter was mounted to the adapter plate, something on the solenoid interfered with the exhaust. It was a USA car. I think that it interfered with the aluminum air injector housing.The interference was only during removal and installation. Once the starter was in place, all was good. The only problem with this is that, even with the new starter, it would still be necessary to loosen the exhaust to get it out. It seemed to me that if the starter had been rotated a very small amount on the mounting plate, the problem would have been avoided. This was done quite some time ago and my memory is a little hazy on the details. It may be that the current starters have this problem rectified.

Also, the original heat shield did not fit and I had to fabricate one that did.

Still, it is a worthwhile project for a Dino.

 

The interference is from the exhaust manifold studs for both EU/USA version Dinos,longer studs on USA mean more studs impact but stud removal/re-install solves it all

Also, Dinogts is referring to the sound of the starter when activated, he has heard mine. Not a big thing, just a different sound than the original.

 

The original heat shield will not slip over the starter to fit between the exhaust manifold and the starter. I simply cut two grooves in the heat shield to allow the shield to flex in the middle. This provided the proper geometry to fit correctly. With the heat shield removed first, the starter will come out without moving the exhaust manifold.

If you have an original heat shield, dont cut into the original insulating material as these contain white (chrysotile) asbestos.

Tony, is that true of the original alternaor shield as well? I have my original sitting on a shelf with the insulation material in bits, most or which is oil soaked. thanks for the warning, Kevin
