I'm new to Sim racing. I've done weeks in real Skip Barber single seaters, but I would really like to set up a great sim at home.

I think I want to use GT5 Prologue now, and the full GT5 when it's released. But the feeling of slipping -- the seat of the pants feel -- is missing from almost all sims. The G-forces.

Has anyone here actually added their own Motion Control to such a game?

If not, I'l post on how I proceed.

There are no consumer level motion simulators compatible with consoles like PS3 or Xbox. The reason is, they don't provide output telemetry.

Your best bet is to skip right to racing simulations on the PC. They are much better for training than video games like GT5. While games are fun, they are no where near as accurate as simulations.

The previously mentioned iRacing title is one of the best out there for software. There are many others as well. If you are looking for a tactile feedback simulator, be sure they are compatible with a wide range of software. When you have that sort of investment on hardware, you never want to find it's limits.

We manufacture very-high end training simulators, but you really need to figure out what your budget is before trying to match the best hardware. I'd be happy to help you select some hardware (even if it's not ours).

Can you be specific with what type of racing you are doing and what your budget is?

Thank you for your reply, Chris. I've seen your website, and I really appreciate your feedback.

Off-hand, I want to test out my real cars on real tracks. Cars are a 1996 Porsche C4S, 1952 MG TD, 1967 Ferrari 330 2+2. Tracks would be Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, and other tracks near Pittsburgh.

Budget is about $5k. I hope to have some Carnegie Mellon kids help me with execution.

Your simulators seem to have the two big actuators in back. Are they 2 DOF?
Do your sims support rFactor in addition to iRacing?

    Thanks again,

    Matt

Hi Matt :) Thanks for the nice comments!

Our simulators do in fact support iRacing and rFactor as well as many others. It's a 2 DOF system with many other "hidden" (not clearly visible in a picture) tactile sensation generators. We find that motion is only one small part of what a true racing simulator should be able to convey to you in a physical sense.

All this being said, I fear they are well out of the price range you are after. You may want to look into a DIY type solution. It's a bit more work and can still get rather expensive when all is said and done, but they can be a good head start :) Take a look at these guys: http://www.simxperience.com/ I know them well and their system is great for the price. It simply lacks a lot more of the high end controls and completeness of our systems.

Either way you choose, make sure to ask lots of questions and see if you can try before you buy. Remember; these are tactile simulators. It's all about how they feel. It's impossible to tell from pictures. At the very least, try to get feedback from other customers or drivers who have driven them.

Most of your cars could be found in rFactor and derivatives of. iRacing will have much higher fidelity tracks and cars, but not as big a choice. The tracks, particularly, in iRacing are truly stunning in their accuracy. The beauty of software is, it's cheap! So run them all! Our simulators come preloaded with many, many different kinds of software because we know our clients will want to jump around a lot. Remember that this can be not just a hardcore training tool, it can be fun as well :)

There's only so much any seat can do........how can you duplicate g-forces? Unless the seat is on some kind of massive track giving in 360 degrees of motion at high rates, I can't see how you can do it.

I've always wondered if you had an enclosed cockpit, with the screen fixed securely right in front of you, but had the seat and screen be able to rotate, sort of like those rides at the amusement park where you have your back to the wall of a round, rotating room, then the floor drops? Have that, but have it capable of spinning right over left, left over right, back over front, and front over back, so it would be on an x-axis. So when you accelerate, it would start spinning front over your back. The faster you accelerate, the faster it spins. Start turning right, you start spinning left over right. Both axis' can spin at the same time. Since you are enclosed, and the screen is fixed, you'd always see the screen in front of you, yet feel g-forces.
