Just curious, has anyone actually went to the dealer and placed an order for a 488 Spider yet? If not, when can you?

I have a deposit down (did so back in June) but won't get to actually place an order for a while yet. Just gets me a "slot" with my dealer

For what it's worth in Dubai their system allowed them to start accepting Spider orders just yesterday. So I imagine just a little longer before they start accepting in the US.

When I placed my order for my coupe, I informed them that I may switch it for a spider.

Does anybody know if it is possible to get a glass engine cover for the spider?

Yes, when I lashed up that visual I took a rough guess from the Capristo version (there's pretty wide angle lens on the pic you posted so it's making the glass look longer than it really is). Basically, with the folding hard top there's nothing really worth seeing in the Spider. Makes total sense on the Coupe but all you'll see on the Spider are some boring plastic bits. You're not going to see the engine or, at best, just a sliver of it. Kind of daft. It worked well when it was a rag top, but not any more. Here's a pic I took of the F430 Spider. If it showed that much engine I'd say it was a 'must have'. Alas...

I placed a build order at my dealer for both a coupe and a spider but this just holds my spot as allocations are not yet firmed up. I'm told Summer'16 for the coupe and mid fall next year for the spider at the earliest and I was out in the list in April before the configuration tool was even available.

Thank you for your input, really helped put an end to my expectations regarding this glass cover.

Was told Spring 16 for coupe and Fall 16 for coupe in Canada.

It's a shame really, it used to work well on the F430 when it was still a soft top. And, despite what many are saying, I like the look of the new engine so it would be nice to see it. Guess you can't have everything. The saving grace is that the new rear deck is a really nice design. I think a lot of people will still go or an aftermarket glass cover, though. Once some people get an idea in their head they just can't leave it go, no matter what the reality.

Friends with an ltalia tell me the engine window is a real pain to keep clean. Hopefully the 488 will solve that problem and the Capristo window will stay clean as well.

BTW this was not a problem on my 360 Spider.

Shouldn't the 488 spider be out just a few months after the coupe since it is not a completely new car? If I recall the 430 coupe and spider were both 2005 MY in U.S. and the spider was only a few months behind as it was not a totally new car either.

I see you have a 2011 458 did you order it new? Did you get offered a 2010 458 at the time? I only ask as it seems the customers who buy the most cars etc. will get the first delivered 488 spiders. I bet even those that get a very early delivery 488 spider (whenever that will be) will have to buy a 488 coupe they don't want just to get a spider.

    Congrats on your 488 coupe.

I should have added... Don't let me put you off. If you want a glass cover, don't let me put you off the idea. While it might seem pointless to me, that's only my opinion. Buy the car you want not the one I think you should have. :)

The glass engine cover on a spider, like the one Capristo offers, would typically be in the area I highlighted in yellow. Why couldn't you have a glass engine cover in the area I highlighted with red, which would show the part of the engine people actually want to see?

Because when the top folds over, it will cover that area and you end up seeing the roof's headliner....

That could be solved by giving the car a moonroof... or is that blasphemy?
